In cleaning this front cover, off of a Case 148G engine, I noticed this casting on the inside that was a bit of embellishment by some worker.

What do you mean?

That tag would have been on every one from that foundry.
With different dates or codes.
But they are usually not inside where they can't be seen like that one.

The worker had nothing to do with putting that there. Well ya he could have, depending on whos job that was adding date codes.

Spent 40 years in foundry. Wed put date codes wherever they would fit. Mostly on the outside but if it fit better like the one in the picture that is where it went. Some customers had specs as to where they may be. May 11th 1st shift if that casting had come from my foundry. Dont know when foundries went to Julian dating .

Correction, that casting would have come from 3rd shift. Both screws would be Philips for 1st

Working construction for over 40 years we used to sign a board someplace in the building with our names and the date.
