Yanmar Alternator not charging

I have an alternator not charging. Do I short the field terminal while running to test the alternator?

You should get a meter before you start shorting things..

Place a screwdriver across the back of the alternator at the bearing area. If it's charging, the screwdriver should stick(magnetism).

If the alternator is internally regulated there is no field terminal to short. Unless it's a really old tractor made before about 1972, it probably has an internal regulator.

Yes get a meter....don't go around shorting things. Harbor Freight have great little ones for less than 10 bucks. I have used them for years and have several that I keep handy in different locations.

To test, with tractor off measure the battery terminal voltage. Start the engine and run RPMs up to say 1000 and read the battery's terminal voltage again. If more than the first measurement the alternator is working....if the same its not.
