What Engine??

Pushed my Cletrac/Avery/Montgomery Ward/Massey Harris tractor in the shop today to see how bad the engine is. It has been sitting out in a field for over 40 years. I
think the tag on the engine is from a rebuilder but Im hoping someone can help me with what engine it is for sure so I can locate parts or a complete engine.

Shes in pretty rough condition.

Start soaking it with ATF then gently tap it with a block of wood and it should break free.

The above is a joke as that seems to be part of the advice given to every person who posts about having a locked up engine from sitting too long. The difference is Masseyharrisnut actually started with what I advise everyone to do after the first attempt fails - pull the head and see what you're dealing with. I am betting half the engines that are posted about being locked up look like this (or worse) and trying to free it up and then use is a waste of time, money and effort.

Sorry I have no advice on where to find a replacement engine. I hope you find one.

That looks like an original tag.
The 008 and 006 may have been done after a rebuild.
Probably has babbitt bearings.
The IXB I worked on did.

I think your title says it all: What engine? Is there one under there somewhere? Here's hoping you find the bottom end in better shape than the top!! Was there water in the pan too? How about the tranny and differential? If there were broken shifter boots and it sat that long, this whole tractor might just be a bunch of cast iron cases. It is definitely a challenge, but with that long name and pedigree, who could blame you for trying to save it. Steve

Hi Steve. Its absolutely amazing to me but there wasnt a drop of water in the oil pan. And only a few drops came out of the transmission. Definitely want to save it. Hopefully someday I will be able to find out more about how many where sold into Canada as a Massey Harris. Thanks and be safe.

Just for fun,you may go in there with a wirebrush, then hone it with old stones, poor two bottles of pb blaster in it and see.
It all depends if you have time to.loose or not. But getting this loose and running will be fun.

That would be a nice red one to have. I would remove the engine and strip it to the bare block. Then haul it to a machine shop and have it hot tanked. If you cant push the sleeves out get them to. Then after that inspect the block for cracks and go to it. It would be a nice little project to work on as in everything is light , can pack that block under your arm. Not bad of a job. Then u know whats in your engine. No pancake syrup there.

That's really good to hear. Then even the engine might be saved, as long as the pistons, lifters and valves will come out of their bores. I know you'll post progress reports. Looking forward to the day it looks almost as good as the 25!! steve

I think the other GL did a cub lately that looked as bad. I cringe at the looks of it, but it might be better than it looks. Especially with two of the pistons near the top of the stroke.

As I have said before, the MH tractors are some of my favorites.
The 1946 101 SR that I pulled my sawmill with for years was a very stout well made tractor.
Thank you Sir for saving some of these great tractors.
