Any suggestions on why it would run for approx 30 minutes and start sputtering and want to quit.
Been mowing with a rotary mower and make a pass or two and it starts acting up, push the clutch in and it picks up again. Put new spark plugs, points, condenser, distributor and wires and coil on it. It's an updraft system. Don't think it's electrical.

Just wanted to thank all of you for your suggestions. Happened to get in contact with an 82 year old gentleman that was the IH shop forman. He took a look and it was actually the float in the carberator. The setting was wrong. How that happened is beyond me. We are back in the seat again.

Fought that same battle with our F-544 (gas) this spring. I think Allan is on the right track with the fuel though.

Mine did the exact same thing (three or four passes after running like a champ...and then it dies). Here's what I found: one nasty *ss fuel system. I neglected to really get into the fuel system because all of our equipment is well pretty maintained. But there are two filter screens on that tractor...one at the inlet to the sediment bulb, and the second at the inlet to the carburetor. Both of those screens were dirty, but not plugged. Further investigation into the fuel tank pointed us to the crud built up in the bottom of the tank right where the fuel line attaches.

So needles to say it was a thorough cleaning that cured the 544's woes...all this after I put points, condenser, and a coil in it. Even thought it might be the fuel safety shut off switch that mounts to the bottom of the carburetor.

I guess I should have practiced what I preached and did some diagnostic work before just changing out parts. A lot of times it's the simple things that are overlooked that create most of our headaches.

Good luck!

Billy

might double check point setting, if they are too close they will do that when it gets hot.

If yours is like mine, there is a screen in the fuel inlet of the carb. Unscrew the elbow at the inlet and there is a long skinny screen in there. Mine was partially plugged and acted the same way. Also had problems with the electric fuel shutoff at the base of the carb.

JA,

When my tractor did that nasty trick, I finally tracked the problem down to two flies which were stuck inside the standpipe of the sediment bowl.

Bad news is that the sediment bowl base has to be unscrewed from the tank to access that standpipe.

I had the same thing happen to me on a 2500 backhoe Turned out to be a mud daubber cadaver that would stop the flow from the tank to the sediment bowl.

Put a new sediment bowl on but didn't take the base out of the tank, but had good gas flow from the sediment bowl to carb. Took line off and checked, but will look at the base. Is there a standpipe up in the tank also?

Yes,

That's what I'm talking about. The upper part of that base is a little pipe. The darned thing sticks up in the tank a bit and will plug.

Looks like ya have all kinds of fuel..... .for a little while.

Allan
