How do you tell when a watermellon is ripe and ready to pick off the vine?

Look where the watermelon attached to the vine. Follow the vine up to the first group of leaves, there will be a curly thing. When that curly thing turns brown, it is ready to pick. I raise watermelons as a kid and this worked everytime.

When your thieving neighbor picks it for you, it is ready. Wife had two lone watermelons this year. Checked them one evening, were gone the next. Don't think any four legged critters wear Nike shoes. Prints lead off toward neighbor's house. Hope they got sick.

Check the underside, the stripes or green color should be replaced by a yellow or white colored spot. Then check the first curl in the vine next to the watermelon's stem. when it is dried down to a brownish color, your melon should be ripe. If it is not, repeat the above instructions with another melon and wait for another 4 or 5 days..LOL Ben
