Here's the short story;
Went into local CNH/CIH dealer on Saturday, told him I needed a complete engine gasket set for a Farmall M. He said he could get it aftermarket, he said roughly 80 bucks, but would call me Monday with what all exactly was in the kit and price. OK I said, sounds good. Never got a call. Called him back today (Wednesday), he said that it has already come in (kinda convenient), BUT, $140!

Am I really "ethically" obliged to go ahead and buy it, and just learn a lesson to be a little more clear and concise with my instructions on calling me with the price etc.? Or, can I tell them that I don't want it because it is too expensive? (found other comparable kits for $95)

Thanks

Here is what I don"t under stand, Why does the dealer charge shipping for a part that they don"t carry? If I have to pay shipping I mite as well order it off the internet and have it sent to my house. save me time and fuel running back and forth to order parts then pick up parts.

If you special order a part either by air or fill-in ground then you pay shipping. If you want to wait for their stock order then there is no freight charge.
They can't stock everything. It bothers me more that they don't stock a lot of stuff in their depot's anymore, never mind at the local dealers...

I would say you are not obligated.I had a similar situation when I went to my Case/Ih dealer wanting a heat gauge for my 140 touch control block.
He quoted me a price -had to order it of course.when it shows up its 45.00 more than the quoted price.I asked what the deal was and he said CIH no longer carried it and he had to go to a dealer source(Bates Corp)-real tricky huh?
I told him to keep it. If it would have been 5-10.00 no big deal.
Some of this may be a bit of assumption on the parts persons behalf"ah he will take it".
At that point I tend to remind them of aftermarket availability.
But I still buy genuine when I can.
just my opinion.

I just ordered an item for $552.99 and the bill
came in for $660.35, due to $107.36 for shipping
and handling. I double checked with UPS and the
cost was $42.. I told the dealer that I didn't
think it was ethical to rape me for fake handling
charges. And he just lost me as a customer.
Many dealers are doing that now, to pad the bill.

Howdy,

Like one of the others who is a partsman said, you never quote a price if you don't know what it is. If someone wants me to give them an eyeball estimate I might throw a figure but will quickly follow that with "but let me make sure" and then find them the actual price. Now, there are times when our main store will do price updates and the cost will go up without me knowing it. But if it does happen, I make good on the old price. What bothers me is the fact that the parts guy went ahead and ordered the kit without the guy asking him to order it. If I were you I would just tell him that it is more expensive than quoted and let him keep the part. He needs to be more careful and actually listen to his customer. God bless.

Well, thats way more than 80.I would just tell him I am not going to do that.If he comes down to 100 maybe buy it.No way of knowing what it cost him,but you can beat that price almost anywhere.I would tell him that,if he got indignant about me not buying it.60 dollars is a lot of profit on a set of gaskets, and it could even be more than that.

I've never known a dealer who wouldn't work with me when I told them they quoted a different price over the phone.

If indeed they quoted you the wrong price, they should be willing to sell it to you at their cost or the original quote, whichever is more. If they don't want to do that, then they can eat the part.

Dunno..... I've never been in that situation really. Anything I've ever ordered was paid for in one of two ways:

1. If I outright told him to order the part without a firm price, I paid the price or paid the restocking fee... or 2. If it came in at some outrageous amount over the quoted price which has happened at times then he ate it.

Freight is a different story. We've gotten into it on freight at times and go back and forth on that; work something out. It was never a deal breaker...

The gasket set belongs to the dealer.....he should know his price closer than that....to quot you a price that far off....we would eat the differnce and charge you $80.....his cost wasent much more than $80....you should not have been given a price without looking it up.....his fault he learned something..... .

Well thanks for all the help. I'm gonna go talk to the guy tomorrow, see what he has to say. I always feel like as a 17 year old walking into these dealerships and shops where you usually don't find people as young as me, that people are going to assume me "easy" and stupid and try to push me around.

Thanks again

I would certainly remind him of the original price."Gee you said eighty which is good and I was happy cause I can get it for ninety on the internet so whats so special or extra in the 140 dollar set, please sir.If its the same then would you mind keeping it in stock for someone else''.Its pretty reasonable to not want it for that much more.

Depends alot on what type of relationship you have with the dealer and how much you intend to use him in the future. I would probably pay it but tell him not to order again if it is above the estimate without calling you.

I would explain to him that he told you around 80.00. If he says he cannto do that, he is pulling your chain, I sell A&I parts, then sell complete OH gasket sets for 91.77 plus shipping. They are Felpro gaskets, I think, they are in a blue and white box. Call NAPA, they should be the same price or cheaper

I would ask them about what happened to the $80 set ? and then see if he will price match the other set you found. But remember you will also have some shipping to add. Unless you told him to order it I wouldn't feel obligated to buy it. I work in parts and we get stuck with stuff we were told to order sometimes. Not bad enough yet to make everyone prepay like most dealers do.

Several times over the years I've gone ahead and paid for items under similar situations. But, remember what happened and try to find what you need elsewhere the next time. Always figured that a few dollars ain't going to make me or break me. They are the ones that are going to suffer the lost later on. And by the way the set is 90.00 here at YT.

Should have just paid for it when you ordered it then they could have ate the rest. or at least he would have given you a better "estimate". seems like a lot of places anymore tell you one thing then charge you something else.

You are not obligated to buy it. Obviously there was a discrepancy between the two parties, but there was never a verbal or written agreement that you would purchase the gaskets. It is just a matter of is he expecting you to buy (as in he cant return it) and do you want to burn a bridge with him? If it were me I would say dont buy.

Feel Free to call my lawyer anytime with furher questions.

You are not required to buy it if its not priced as estimated. I'd probably tell him that its ok, I found the same thing on the internet my plan was to keep business local if he was within a few dollars, but that is quite a difference. I'll just order them myself. Without a doubt he can send them back.
