broken plastic on delco starter solenoid- possible to glue?

I just had the big starter for my IH 806 rebuilt. As I was tightening the battery cable onto the post, I was a little too strong when tightening, and broke the plastic cap on the end of the solenoid.

It is perfectly clean and I have all the pieces- so I'm going to try to super glue it together tomorrow. I wonder if this has any chance of working...I have haying to do!

Can you buy just this part of a solenoid? I doubt it- probably will need a new one.

I have good luck using a soldering iron and melting the part back together. It takes a bit of practice just like welding metal but it really seems to work well. When you have nothing to loose give it a try. Heat along the crack till it's gooy and stir it together as you move along.

If you are determined to fix the plastic, I would suggest roughing area up on the outside with sandpaper then applying JB weld which you can find in almost any hardware store. It is a two part epoxy that needs to be mixed, just follow the directions. It needs about 12 hours to set up.

There's a epoxy made for plastic. It works better on some plastic than others. It's stronger than most epoxy. You can find it at wal-mart around here.

that thing is water resistant not water proof but check I bet it is not very expensive but on the chance it is there is a kit that is designed to repair plastic tanks has a piece of fiber glass and 2 part epoxy. I have fixed many over flow and windshield washer tanks and it works great have to prep and be fast when you blend the 2 chemicals. cost around $10 but on the tanks they are hard to find so I use it often

The haying will wait 20 minutes. Go get another $2 cap.

Notice how it lives right underneath that fuel tank?

If one day that thing comes apart, shorts out and starts the tractor on fire, you'll be wishing ya had taken the time.

You should be able to get a solenoid kit that has that cap in it and new bolts and the contact washer and not have to glue one. Last kits I got were Borg Warner BWD brand at a auto supply and weren't that expensive at all much less than a new solenoid.

If it were me, I would glue the broken one back together, and also buy a new one, and install the new on the starter, and now you have a spare!

If its a Delco they"re pretty common and easy to get. One for my tractor was $12 at NAPA for the whole thing. They will likely have just the cap too. I"m sure you can glue it as others have said but I"d look for a new one 1st. Lots of hay on the ground here in Northern, IN. Good luck.

I would call your rebuilder and explain what happened, He will probably give you a new piece. I wouldn't attempt to glue it as the cover is what holds the square bolt heads in place and when you try to tighten it again it will break. Also, check the connections inside to make sure they were not damaged.
Remember for future reference," Murphy's Universal One Size Fits All Torque Setting = 3/4 of a turn past stripped then back off 1 full turn." Jf

I bought a small bottle(all you would need)of GORILLA GLUE at Lowes.....your best bet....

It is hard to squeese out of bottle....but it dont take much...it expands while curing....OK makes the repair stronger.......Don

I pulled the same trick. Darn cheap Mexican crap. Plastic was about the equivalent of 3-4 paper sheets thick. I bought a new one and was more careful.

Actually, mine was probably the original piece from 1963- which may explain why it broke.

But more likely, I was just injudicious with my application of force.

The rebuilder company had a cap for me- $4.60 + 40mile round trip...
