70's 366 Tall-deck tuneup

Just found the site and searched for an answer but couldn't find it. I just got a 73 C6500 with a 366. My question is relating to tuning up the engine. What should the compression be? Spark plug gap? Timing? Valve gap for intake/exhaust? Idle RPM and anything else I left out. The truck runs a little rough and diesels but I think thats from the timing. I just want to get her running smooth again. Thanks!

Nice looking rig. I'd hate to pay the fuel bill, though. I suggest swapping to an HEI distributor. Look in heavy trucks & schoolbuses with the 366/427 from the 80's for used ones. A new one shouldn't go for more than $100. Your cyl psi should be at least 120, most important is they are all within 10psi of each other. I would go 8 deg BTDC at about 750rpm on base timing. You really should get a repair manual for correct specs. I usually mess with small blocks.

Even with HEI those things could foul a set of plugs like no other 4 stroke I have ever experienced.

Dieselling is usually a result of air leak, and or idle speed setting. All it takes is a marginal vac-u-boost on the brakes, or a carb without the idle stop solenoid in place to close off the butterflies when turning off the key.

The came with a governed cab. And ran like the gas guzzling low/mid rage torque motors they were.
