Another Automatic Transmission Question

2003 C-1500 Silverado work truck. Check my trans. oil yesterday with the engine off, been sitting for a few days and level on dip stick way way over full mark. Check power steering and that was almost empty. Trans. shifts perfectly. There are no leaks. It also has the oil cooler. What's gone wrong?

The level in the trans will go up when the truck sits. The converter holds about 1/3 of the oil. When it sits, oil slowly drains back into the sump(pan), giving you a false reading. Start the truck, let it run alittle, then check the level. Auto trans fluid levels should be checked with the engine running...

Try checking the P.S. when it is hot. Check the trans when it has been on the road awhile and is idling in park.

I always knew it was suppose to be hot and running when checking but didn't realize it would vary that much while cold and sitting still. Don't I feel like the south end of a donkey heading north.

Don't feel bad. How long was the vehicle inactive? There is a check valve to prevent the drainback of the converter oil. It could be that it is leaking from dirt in the oil. Could be an indicator that the fluid should be changed. When was the last time?

The truck hadn't been moved in 4 days.Oil and filter were changed about 3 years ago, roughly 40,000 miles. Service manager at a Chevy told me the same thing, the converter oil drains back to the pan.I agree ,oil and filter change wouldn't hurt anything.
