NH 489 rollers - how many turns for crimping?

Hey all:
Yeah, it's a bit a goofy question, but I've got about a 2 day window to get mow and rake and bale my fields before the rain comes and then I'm back out in the bush working for another 7 days.
I release all tension on the rollers every year, and then spin the handle 14 rotations to mow. If I tighten the rollers, say, 17 turns or more, will I get more aggressive crimping, or will it bung up in front of the rollers and then spit out huge gobs (tough to dry). How many turns do you go on your rollers?

My Hesston manual says look at the alfalfa stems. They should not be visibly bashed, but should have spots that bend easily.

Our fields are primarily timothy with some trefoil, rye grass and a little alfalfa. I'll tension the rollers up a little more, and let it rip today - Sunday & Monday thankfully look dry and sunny in the forecast this morning.
Thanks for the input.

The crank adjustments will have little effect on the crimping of your crop. If you want to greatly improve the crimping/crushing action and reduce drying time of crop , set the rollers closer together ( roller gap). The cranks do not do this. Set the roller gap by removing some of the roller gap shims at each end of the roller mounts. Your operators manual has directions and photos for doing so.Take out enough of them to leave only a crack of daylight visible between the rollers. As they came from the factory there was 3/16 "or more gap between the rollers. Reduce the gap to nearly nothing and your Haybine will do a much better job of crimping/crushing.
