Fixing leaking hydraulic cylinder?

I have a Ford 335 Industrial with a Front End Loader. One of the cylinders leaks a little bit at the end. Someone mentioned that you can

"tighten the packing on the end of the cylinder?"

How does one do this? I'm no hydraulic expert, but I thought that if a cylinder leaked, there wasn't much you could do about it except replace or rebuild it.

That works only if you have the Vee type Chevron packing. I'm not familiar with the cylinder style on the 335 but I'm guessing it's not going to have the Vee packing they were used primarily on old stuff.

If that cyl has a sister cyl.. get em both done if you can afford it.. they are likely the same age, and near the same condition of wear... one new cyls and one used cyl may make the new cyl do lots of the work.. or the used cyl may go ahead and start leaking ..

I think most hyd. cylinders now have "O" rings that have to br replaced. That means taking cylinder apart, at least partially.
