Problem baling grass hay...

I have an old 14T John Deere baler that is having trouble baling some grass hay. For some reason the hay gets clogged at entrance to the baling chamber.

The grass was pretty tall this year (about 2 feet) and it seems the fork that pulls the hay into the chamber is just sliding by the hay and not pulling it in.

Has anybody had this problem or is there something that isn't working on the baler? The fork and auger all are working and not slipping (meaning shear pins are not broken).

Any suggestions?

Thanks...

Are you sure that the auger is doing its job? Once baled some Sudex that was so 'slick' that we had to drive lock washers on the flighting so it would take-a-hold. If the auger's working properly, hay is probably so slick that fork is sliding thru it; I'd suggest more hay/bigger windrows.

thurlow,

You're probably right about the auger not doing its job! The hay is slick and the fork can't pull it into the chamber. The grass was cut with a swather so I windrowed it with a side delivery rake so it would wind the hay up like a rope...but that didn't help. I also tried putting two rows together but that didn't help either.

You mentioned adding lock washers to the flighting...hmmmm that sounds like something to try! Would you mind elaborating a bit more on how you did that?

Thanks...

Been a long time; can't remember how many or what size.........probably 5/8 or 3/4 inch; just drive the 'split' of the washer on to the flighting 'til it bottoms out; don't remember how many; I'd try one every 12 or 18 inches.......maybe more if that doesn't work.

try baling it in the morning before sun gets too hot, its a little stickier then.

I had this ridiculous long grass seed stalks in my hay recently and it wasn"t turning over in the belt baler to start a bale because it was too dry and slippery, would bale fine from about 8am to 1pm, then just shoot straight up and out of the baler instead of turning over and starting a bale. Was a huge problem and baler mechanic said nothing wrong with baler, has had many calls about the same problem, said he has told everybody same thing, "straw" stalks in hay are too dry, tough and slippery, bale next day in morning.

did what he said and baler worked like a charm, no problems

Assuming that even though it appears that the forks are just "sliding by" the hay, you are still pulling your baler ahead and your pick-up is still picking up more hay, where is all this hay that is being picked up going if the forks aren't feeding it into the chamber? If it's not being pushed into the chamber it can't be breaking shear bolts so you must still be moving ahead right?

No one has mentioned the knife being dull, or the plunger out of adjustment. We had a 224W, but I think the basics are the same.

You can also have the feeder out of time. You really need to look in the manual, it should have a trouble shooting section.

Good luck,, Gene

GeneMO and showCrop,

The baler is timed correctly - works great for everything but this grass! I will check the knife and see what condition that is in.

The pick-up is working okay...what happens is the it just keep picking up the hay and cramming it into the head. I'm sure if I didn't stop at this point shear pins would start breaking!

I tried the "washer" idea but all it did was grind up the hay. Sheesh...I guess I waited too long and the hay is just too dry.

Thanks everyone! I sure do appreciate your help and advice.

You can adjust those forks that stuff the hay in the bale chamber to make a deeper or shallower stroke...maybe they need to be a bit deeper.

I had a 14T, and that is the only adjustment I could recall that might help.

TimS in Mo,

Thanks Tim! I tried that first thing but it didn't help. I bought that baler new way back when...I never had this sort of thing happen before.

a lot of excelent suggestions but i would pull her up under the shsde tree start from the beginning and go thru all settings of the bainer including the little latch in the bail chambet and above all make sure the knife is sharp. that bailer should bail anny thing u can drive it to
