Battery cables frying

I have a 1952 Super M in which I just replaced the starter switch. It is a positive ground system (6 volt). When I go to crank the motor it gets cherry red hot at the connections from the battery (negative) that"s connected to the starter switch and begins frying it just before it cranks. Once it starts it stops and cools down. Do I need to look at a thicker gauge cable. The current one is a top post regular battery cable.

Oh, you need cable made for for you 6 volt system. 0 is the correct gauge I think. I get mine made at the Case/IH dealer. Just tell them how long and what kind of ends and they make them while I wait. 12 volt cables won't work. Dave

A regular auto parts store battery cable is several sizes too small for a 6 volt system. Positive or negative ground has nothing to do with it. A six volt starter draws a LOT more current than a 12 volt one, and 12 volt cables are too small.

Need at least 1/0 or 2/0 cables. NAPA has them on their website, but they're expensive. Any place that deals with heavy equipment or semi-trucks will have them, or you can buy 2/0 welding cable and make your own.

that 4 gauge wire will absolutely burn to pieces. You need to go to www.brillman.com and buy the correct cables for your tractor. Both ground and starter lead cables. Then your tractor should roll over much better with 6 volt.

The cables have to be swagged or soldered into the battery clamps. Battery cable clamps that bolt the cable down under a strap are a joke.
