A buddy of mine has an old friend that is dying of cancer and he wants to sell a Marlin 30-30 lever action rifle. I am thinking $300 + or-.

What do you guys think is a fair price? It is in good not great condition. (I have not seen this rifle yet) It is 20 + years old the guy lives 60+ miles from me.

Depends on condition and model... 30AS has a birch stock, 336 has a walnut stock. I think there was a model with a straight grip too. Been a while since I've priced one... I'd think $300 would be upper end, if its not like new.

Per Gun Digest Blue Book 2001
30A perf $280, exc.$230, Vg $150
36 deluxe ,same
336A 290,250,200
model 94: $1200, 895, 695

$300 is WAY too much for that rifle and caliber(just my opinion). There's a few really good sites on the internet that'll give you a decent idea of a firearm's worth. Takes a little searching, but you can find a dozen different quotes, including details regarding condition, model numbers, etc. in about a half hour of looking...Let us know what you find out !

I have a 30A. I have all my firearms on an Excel spreadsheet, and update the current value about once a year. Without looking, I think I have mine down for maybe $275. For $250 to $300, you couldn't go wrong if it's in good condition.

It probably won't go anywhere as an investment, but it's a darned handy rifle to have around.

I have purchased 2 in the past few years from friends of mine. Both came with 3-9x40 scopes. I gave $150 for one in good shape, and $200 for one in excellent shape. I think $300 is a bit high. If it were me, I'd say $175-$225 is more about what it is worth. If you think because of circumstances you want to give a bit more, so be it.

I think they made some of those with the octagon barrel? They may be worth more, but $300 seems high for a standard one.

Go to auctionarms.com and search the finsihed auctions for a good idea of value. For a run of the mill Marlin 336 in 30-30 I'd say $150-225.00. Etras or special issues raise the price.

I guess the guys neighbor is buying it. It has a scope on it so I am told.

The cancer patients days are numbered, the chemo treatments are not working so he stopped the treatment. I have never met this old guy (early 70's) He is a friend of a friend that I work with.

I dont have my guns on a spread sheet but I have a list of all my guns in my garage tucked away in a cabinet, make, model, serial numbers and calibers. I have about $2500 in guns. I dont own any handguns though. You need to get a permit in Michigan to buy a handgun legally. (I dont like that). No permit needed for a rifle or shotgun.

$300. Really?
Dad got me that rifle for my HS graduation present.
Paid $85 new for it at Gambles.
Shot my share of deer with it over the years but retired it several years ago. My eyes were changing so I bought a new rifle with a scope.
Took the old Marlin out last season just to carry on a 5 man drive.
Afterwards I snapped it up to my cheek and put a round in the bottom of a 5 gal pail at about 80 paces. Still fit like a comfortable old shoe -
Great little rifles! I wont ever sell mine but that's about twice what I thought it was worth.

Bought several for $115 with scope. Probably a 5 on a scale 1 to 10. Now if this has hex barrel or is made before 1964, then you got something. Check a pawn shop and see what value is. I had these guys do that and that was the basis. Gun broker dot com will give you some info, too.
