Good source for alternators?

I need an alternator for my JD 2950. Actually it's just the voltage regulator that's bad. When the battery light starts blinking I can tap on the VR and it starts functioning again. Unfortunately, Deere will no longer sell VR or capacitor for this alternator and will only sell brand new replacement alternators for $500.

Does anyone know of a good reliable source to buy new or rebuilt alternators or even parts for my old one? Or should I just bite the bullet and get a new one from Deere?

Have you tried taking the parts you need to a parts store. NAPA can usually match them up. It's nice to do business with the dealer when you can.

You must have an "open station" tractor with the relatively rare 33 Amp alternator.

It is a Bosch alternator, and it would certainly HELP if you had posted the numbers off of the tag!

The regulator for the 33 Amp unit IS shown as NLA, subbing to a new 55 Amp alternator, part # AL81436, @ about $325.00. NOT SEEING where they are coming up with the $500.00.

MOST LIKELY, the brushes, hanging from the back of the regulator are stuck and/or worn out. A local automotive electrical shop should be able to replace just the brushes, or get you a regulator, as needed. (The brushes are soldered in place.)

Or contact these folks, with the alternator numbers in hand. Almost certainly they can help you with parts, and are good to deal with and will quickly send out any ordered parts.

No way. Try going through the back door and finding the regulator through parts stores... but your best bet is an alternator shop.

I have been buying alternators and starters from DB Electrical in Johnson City, TN 800-753-2242.
90% of what I needed they have in stock, NEW not rebuilts, with 1 yr. unconditional replacement warranty. Give them a try.

Bob, you are correct, it is the 33A. I'm not sure where I came up with $500 either :) It could be faulty memory I suppose or perhaps they were adding the pulley assembly? Probably my bad memory since it was last year when I called Deere for a part quote before I figured out I could just tap it back into action. Oh hammers, is there anything you can't solve?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Unless it is an old contact point regulator, all you are doing is making it worse by taping on it. Sounds as though your brushes might be worn and hangin up and when you tap it, they fall into place for a little bit again. Take it apart and see what the brushes and commutator look like, it might just need to be cleaned and new brushes, and you would be good to go.
