torque topper

Has anyone installed a Century Torque Topper [propane injection]on a 60 HP diesel tractor? If so, how much did it help? Did it work good?

It will help to the point that sometimes it hurts. Had a customer with one on a Deere 4520. He had it set so high , it blew a pistion through the side of the block. Luckily he didn't kill himself. Easy does it.

You can help most diesels with propane injection, some more than others. The direct injection diesels IH, Deere and etc will respond better than Case and others. You have to watch cooling temps as you are in effect overfueling the engine. Set correctlythey'll add 15% or so with no long term engine effects. The theory is that the propane helps the diesel fuel burn at the edges of the combustion chamber. At one time they were quite popular before turbos were common on most bigger tractors. You still see an occasional big rig with it on the highway.

Works better on turbo engine. They have more airflow than natural aspirated engines.
Adding LP vapour to a diesel can easily make the combustion chamber mixture too rich. The LP vapour displaces some air that would otherwise enter the combustion chamber and support combustion.
Co-gneration and peak power diesel gen sets are often set up to burn LP or natural gas.
The engines are either carbureted or set up with port injection of gas. A full but slightly lean mix of air/LP or natural is drawn into the combustion chamber. Then lit when the fuel injector sprays as small amount of "pilot" fuel.
Generally fuel costs, emissions and engine wear are reduced
The engines retain their ability to run on 100% diesel too.

Yes, I had it on the dyno, but it was too long ago for me to remember the details. Wasn't a very big bottle as I recall. The tractor was sold as salvage. The same guy had a D 21 Allis with a 903 Cummins in it. Tore all the gears out but one, so he plowed in 7th gear with a 7 bottom monoframe plow. You had to know the guy to really appreciate him. lol.

If you have access to a dyno you can try it with a 20lb propane tank and regulator you'll need a 1/8 oriface and a valve and hose. Stick it in the air cleaner and try it. That will give you the approximate boost of a torque topper.

I'm a mechanic for a public utility, most of our drivers drive like it is the last lap of the Daytona 500, so I can apreciate the guy with the D21. I used one of those propane torch bottles on it and couldn't tell it did anything. I don't think the bottle could supply enough propane. Thanks for all the help everybody.
