OT/Gas Water Heater Vent

I am replacing my furnace, and the replacement is a high efficiency which uses a pvc horizontal exhaust through the outside wall. The current set up is for the old furnace and the gas hot water heater tied together, and they use a block/masonry chimney outside of my house up through the overhang/eave. With the new set up, I won't need to exhaust the furnace through the vertical chimney, just the hot water heater. Is there any way to vent the hot water heater horizontally like the new furnace? I would love to remove the block chimney, as I will need to re roof probably next summer anyway, and it would be great to tear down that block chimney prior to the roof job. Thanks in advance.

What part of the country are you in? An well water or air source heat pump maybe a reasonably price alternative for both heating and cooling.
Oil and gas prices may increase but coal produced electricity will remain stable.
Heat pumps are also less trouble than ultra high efficiency furnaces.

In Northern Michigan. I have an outside wood boiler, the furnace is just back up and early fall/late spring when the boiler is not up and running. Won't hardly get used. Same with the hot water heater. It is only on for about 3 months, June, July, August or so. I normally light the boiler in September, October at the latest. Just be nice to take that old block chimney down, especially since I will have to re roof, and it would also allow me to make by deck a little bigger. Currently the chimney is right along side the door. With it gone, I could go wider with the deck too.

I would go with Jerry Cent. Then you can do away with old vent that sucks up air (you have heated or cooled) 24/7.

Hi Paul,

Not all gas appliances can be power vented. The appliance mfg is the only one that can state weather an appliance can or can not be power vented.

You can gravity side vent water heaters. There again only the mfg can tell you if your model can/can not be short vented as there is a minimum stack length requirement. There are also building codes you have to follow for side vent locations.

Besure and check out my "Water Heater Rocket" thread on the tool forum.

It's your choice but no chimney beats any type of chimney.
An air source heat pump is good from March until November.
Going with an electric water heater gets another combustion appliance out of the house.
The Heat pump will drop the humidity in the house during summer which can an advantage regarding health, mold and wood/plaster etc.

Why not use one of those point of use heaters for the three months you need then switch it off when you run the wood furnace. By the way where are you in MI I have one of those wood furnaces too. How do you keep the heat exchanger from liming up with your furnace. I'm in Owosso

Near Traverse City. Haven't any problem so far, will be going on the 7th season when I light it in a couple months.

I have a power vent water heater that vents
through the basement wall. Also AMANA high
effieciency gas furnace vents right next to it.
