9n ford etc

A friend has a 9n ford. Had a local ford mechanic convert to 12volts and now the amp meter shows full charge all the time. Sounds like voltage regulator problem, but claims he put a new one on it.
Also, where is the best place to buy parts and manuals for a 800 ford, and IHC Farmall B? Thanks

I would check the condition of battery by checking each cell with a hydrometer and see what the specific gravity is. Should read 1.260 or better. Take a volt meter and check the charging voltage at the battery, should be around 14.0 volts with the throttle at 1/2 or 3/4 open. You can probably get manuals from external_link.
They may have them on this forum too. Hal

On the 9N, first we need to know if the conversion used an alternator or a 12-Volt generator.

If an alternator, what make and internally or externally regulated?

The new regulator could have beeen bad. I put a new one in an 80 amp Delco that was bad. All it would do was charge wide open. Replaced the regulator again and all was fine.

"That is why they use voltmeters or idiot lights with alt. and not ampmeters."

WHERE did you come up with THAT idea... there's been ALL SORTS of vehicles and machinery made over the years with an ammeter and an alternator.

Well I can't think of any off the top of my head that used an ampmeter and an alt ? Likely were some, but also likely they were rated for the proper amps. well above what the old gen. system was equipped with.

When working at the gen. repair shop when these fellows did these 6 to 12 conversions they always complained about their ampmeters show charge all the time and they also bounce around. A voltmeter will cure it.

#1 terminal is excite, #2 terminal is voltage sense.. connecting either to 12v does not make it charge max..
