Gas gauge shows wrong?

In my, new to me, GMC Topkick the gas gauge seems to move a little but shows between 1/2 and 3/4's full and it is less than 1/4 full. It has a tank on each side and the owners manual says the gauge averages the 2. They both are about 1/4 tank full. How do you tell if it the gauge is bad or the sending unit(s)? I was amazed at how good it seemed on gas. Sigh! Dave

When my TopKick shows a quarter tank, you'd better be pulling into the driveway of a station, cuz you're out! Learned that the hard way. And it has only one tank. Probably all that way; cheap guages, I suspect. I'm in the process of adding a second tank; til then I carry 2 five gal cans on the truck. (Way it uses gas, no use to put only 5 gal. in.)

Probably the fuel sending unit.

Hope the sender isn't like the one on my Blazer - part of fuel pump unit, $400. I keep track of milage with trip odometer and fill up after 250 miles.
