Any idea's on the best way to cut pole barn metal? For examlpe cross cutting the ribbed sheets with minimal burr. What experiences have you had with cutting this and what did you use to cut with? Thanks!

if its only one or two cuts, tin snips work ok. if its a lot of cuts, use a skil saw with either a regular blade reversed or they make special blades to cut roof tin with. here are the abrasive type like a chop saw blade or a fine tooth metalcutting blade. i built a fence when we did a barn some years back, just some plywood and a couple 2x4"s so you can slide the saw down the plywood and it keeps the saw straight. lay it on top of the tin and slide the saw across, pretty straight cut.

Yep, works fine..and to cut lengthways and exacto knife works best/utility knife if you wish..score the metal as deep as you can with two or more passes and then start to fold it along the score and it will snap in two

ESPECIALLY ear and eye protection. You can hear a backwards saw blade going through sheet metal a mile away...so you know it's loud only 12" away.

Harbor Freight sells a 14 guage shear that works perfect. It cuts much faster, more accurately, and much quieter than the old turn the saw blade around trick. I bought mine for $40 but they can be had for much less with the right coupon.

I always used a skill saw with the blade backwards. Guys that roofed the house had a sheel metal brake, I dont know what it costs but I'll never cut another piece without one.

Get a good set of WISS snips. Buy the biggest pair you can find. Do not go to the hardware store but search where the union sheetmetal workers buy their supplies. Sometimes on the job we would cut 22 - 20 ga sheets all day long by hand. Crosswise or at an angle it is Much smoother, faster and quiter than a saw. For cutting barn tin lengthwise you will be better off using the saw, Use eye protection.

I had two guys tin my barn roof this spring. Not two much cutting as the tin was ordered to the correct lenth. Roofing with steel is all they do and they just used tin snips for all needed cutting. Sure didn't take them long to cover that big old steep roof.

Several mentioned putting the blade in backwards in a skill saw. That works pretty good. But I have had a little better luck buying an actual metal cutting blade that will fit in a skill saw. Wear ear protection and ear plugs!!!
But this work good, just about like cutting plywood. Oh forgot, watch the sparks, fire extinguisher if water is not handy.

good luck, Gene

When using a saw to cut metal or even wood remember to keep your blade just slightly below the thickness of what you want ot cut, it allows you to have more control and eliminates most binding.

For cutting up and down and not across the ribs. You can use a utility knife. Make a good mark with the knife and then bend on the mark. Snaps in one or two bends and very clean edge.
Bending one way then the other. Take some and practice first.
