I read a discussion about an 851 roller chain. That info helped my problem alot.I had a sprocket go bad, replaced it, and now it keeps jumping out of time, I do notice the chain is loose....now my question: Is there any way tighten the tension on the chain without removing links and does this tighten the roll? Thanks... I 'm getting behind!

top side of machine kind of down in between where chain goes down to an idler is where the slack bolt is at. It will not change tension on bale.Paul

A roller chain become loose because of wear in the link. Take the chain off and see how much wear is in each link. If you can move the pin back and forth in the roller much you should replace the chain BECAUSE this increase in spacing can wear the sprokets BADLY. This wear changes the pitch of the chain.

Just a suggestion,

On any of the older spring-tensioned chainers, if you keep the tractor rpm up and slow the ground speed, it will have the effect of tightening the bale a bit.

However, this emphasizes keeping the apron chain, rollers and sprockets in real good working order also.

Yes. The chain should be just slightly snug with the door closed and the chamber empty. If it is loose and flopping you will need to remove a bar and links. I think too there is a stop bolt on the pivot arm, one on each side. If there is any adjustment left there that might fix it without removing a bar. Be carefull and make sure you have the chain secured. It is heavy and if it starts to unroll you can't hold it.

Thanks All, FYI I got the most results from the stop bolt. I did have to remove a link. The good thing, I was able to roll a decent, tight roll of hay. Hope I can return the help someday.
