555 Versatile stuck in 4th gear

Hello team.
Friend of mine whom I help out with mechanical repairs has a big old 555 Versatile which has jammed in 4th gear. Said it happened once before and someone repaired it but he wasn't sure what they did. I am going to have a look this weekend, anyone got any experience with these? All I know is that everything I have done on it in the past has been big and heavy.
Cheers,
Rex

I haven't done a lot on 555. It has similar gear shifter as the bigger versatiles. Check and see if it has wear and is stuck. You should be able to pull on linkage from under tractor and get it out of gear.

Yep - I agree with Boyd.

I had an 895 Versatile and it was fairly common.

There were two shifters on the outside of the trannie... One of those would be binding and hung. You could always shift it out manually from underneath. But if it was really tight, you might have to start the tractor with the clutch in and move it slightly by turning the steering wheel.

There were some small round plastic bushings in the linkage pivot points. If they wore out, it would make the problem worse.

The shift levers under tractor need to pulled on to unjam. Our 500 does it sometimes.

When shifting into gears, clean exact shifts have to made to avoid jamming on higher hr machines.

Thank you friends. This forum is great. I will head there on the weekend with a bit more confidence now! I wonder if I could turn up some better bushings to replace the worn ones. My friend is quite careful with his machinery, so I imagine that it must be wear and tear on the linkages.
Thanks again,
God Bless,
Rex
