I just bought a new lawn tractor from sears and Im wondering just how stout the hydrostatic drives are on these things, Ive got plans to put a small (42-48")blade on the front just to grade loose sand and pea rock with but I dont want the trans to give out a month after the warranty expires, Ive never had a lawn tractor with Hydrostatic drive and Im curious what kind of luck others have had with em.
Bare in mind this is a Lawn tractor, not garden they only recommend a small snow blade and dont offer a dozer blade. this is the one I bought, wont get it for a week or so....OCG

If its brand new , you should check with Sears about it . Sometimes adding things to a new machine alters the warranty . So that would be my main concern . I'm sure if its meant to handle a blade , Sears would have one made for the machine . Just my thoughts . God bless, Ken

Mine was purchased in 2000 and has not had any problem with the hydro transmission but I only use mine to cut grass weekly.

I messed our lawn mower up pulling cross ties down hill. It burnt the hydrostatic drive out. They will not take much punishment.

More than likely not, it is what you said, a LAWN tractor, designed to mow your lawn, not push rocks, gravel, dirt, etc. You can push a limited amount of snow with it, but the transmission is not designed for a dozer blade. You need a GARDEN tractor for that kinds of work.

I really abused my Murry when I got it and it never gave up 5 years of rocks and small trees took its toll on the blade deck. I pulled many things with it heavy enough to pull the front tires off the ground at times but it was all I had and made it work. when I find another engine I will put it back to use.

What's the horsepower? From Sears, it's possibly made by Poulan. We have an eight year old Poulan 20 hp, hydrostatic, with 900 hours on it. The hydro has never given any trouble, but all the unit has ever done is mow lawn, pull a lawn sweep, and pull a lawn cart.

We have a Agco Allis 1616H that we had to put a new hydro transmission in it. It worked fine until we had it on a lawn roller for a few months. That's when the hydro transmission started to go out.

If the rear wheels don't bolt on with 4 or 5 bolts. And instead uses a keyway and a snap ring. Your machine has the light duty transmission which can be burned out just mowing grass on a hilly lawn.
Sorry you have to research the machine before you purchase it, not after.

Better ask someone who really knows before you take that one. At least you're dealing with a supplier who offers many models. I'm sure they have one that will do just exactly what you want to do.

Craftsman are made by the same company that makes The Husqvarna tractors. The Husky's usually use a Kohler engine though. Better built than Poulan or the cheap MTD. Husky owns Poulan but I don't think the Poulan tractors are anywhere near as good of quality as the Husky models. MTD makes some higher end stuff like Cub Cadet tractors though but they are a lot more money. If your occasionally pushing lighter materials, and not letting the hydro get real hot, it should be OK. If they say pushing snow is OK, pushing loose material shouldn't be any different. Dave

When the local Husky dealer has the hoods open, each model you pass has a different engine. I've seen B&S, Kawasaki, and Kohler
