ATF in hydraulic system

The other day while I was at work my Dad decided to start combining corn, in the process he blew one of the lines for the hydro-stat on my combine. So he replaced the line, and then filled the hydraulics on the machine - not the transmission reservoir- with Dexron III/Mercon ATF. On the up side even after running it for 2 hours with oil barfing out the breather cap on the hydraulics and the transmission 6 gallons low he didn't do any immediate damage. The thing I was wondering was should I worry about the ATF in the hydraulic system? I have been using John Deere hy-trans in they hydraulic system up until now and I don't know if the ATF will affect it at all. If it makes a difference the machine is a New Holland TR70.

I have heard that some Cat owners will run ATF instead of hydraulic fluid. ATF is a high grade oil but I don't know if it's a good idea to mix it with a different type of oil. Dave

ATF is used in lots of hyd. systems. it is a lighter oil used around here in winter. tr70 should have 134 hyd fluid. Your JD oil will work fine.

135 Fan has it on. The part I was more worried about is mixing the ATF with the hy-trans. The Deere oil has been in there for a few hundred hours now.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, but I would probably just drain what you can, change the filter, and refill it with hyd. oil. I've mixed them in the past on the over/under in our 1855 when it blew a line to the cooler and we had to keep going to get the crops off. Had ATF in it, but all we had around was hydraulic fluid.

No problems with it, but I did drain it and refill with just hydraulic oil after I fixed the line.

Hello Hey Pig Farmer.
ATF and Hydraulic oil, such as Mobil flowrex 200 are not the same product, they do not mix very well, but they should not have hurt the system. As the other post said change the filters and the fluid(s), and you should be O.K.
Guido.

Thanks to all of you for the input, last night I drained the reservoir and changed the filter. Just gives that little peace of mind.
