A/C G Battery Drain

Have a 1949 "G" with a rebuild Generator and A new Cutout Relay. Also a rebuilt Starter. It's wired as shown in wiring Diagrams less the light switch. After running and shut it down then try to start it after a while the battery has not enough power to turn engine over. I put the battery charger on for a while it will start. Question is do I have to disconnect battery each time after stopping engine?

if you have a meter you can disconnect one thing at a time and put the meter between battery and load till you figure out which one is grounded. as you figure out which ones it is not leave them disconnected.

Had this problem on once, feel the generator after you shut it down, is it hot? or hotter? Rap the voltage regulator if it is, one of the relays is stuck.

An amp meter would show a discharge with the engine down.

To find if you indeed have a short. Turn everything off. Remove the Positive terminal on the battery, connect a volt meter to the loose (+) terminal the other lead on the meter to the (+) on the battery. If no short exists you will read zero volts. If there is any voltage on the meter start disconneting and watch for the meter to go to zero. You may just have a dead battery

LS, If the Cutout relay is sticking/staying closed after shut down that will run the battery down VERY FAST plus the genny can get hot and the ammeter would swing over to a heavy - discharge. If the belt were loose the genny would sit there n spin like a DC Motor (thats what it is). If she shows a high discharge upon shutdown remove a wire on the relay n see if that stops it?? If so shes not opening on shutdown as its supposed to.

NO you shouldnt have to disconenct the battery at shut down, the relay is supposed to open so the batetry cant sit there n reverse discharge via the genny.

If the relay isnt the cause of battery discharge then there must be another short somewhere assuming the battery itslef is okay and not self discharging. If it stays up disconnected but runs down otherwise then it must be a short either the bad relay or another more minor discharge.

Some cutouts are solid state diodes and are polarity sensitive and need to be wired corect to work right.........

Ship the G to me and I'll use it a couple of years in order to get to the bottom of the problem and make sure it is fully corrected. I'm sure you wouldn't mind if I used it on some vegetable acreage would you?

It is rare to even see a G in my part of the country, and when you do only in a parade. I am age 61 and saw my first last year. I have about decided if I want a G style of tractor I might as well just weld up my own version of one.

Enjoy your G, I'm sure I would if I had one.

a simple 12 volt lamp will be sensitive enough and will last through accidental shorts that the test meter might not survive.

To all of you who answered my question on Battery Drain. Realized my cut out was a solid state relay, so took it back to the shop that had rebuild the Generator and he reversed the polarity. It is now working like it should. Thank you all for your help. L S Sanders
