Methyl hydrate
We were stopped way up north Ontario because of a possible frozen gas line and I trucker stopped to give us a hand in that freezing snow storm.
He pulled out his Methyl hydrate and had us going in less then 5 minites.
Ever since I have been fond of it.
But what exactly does it do?
One story I heard was that it is soluable with water and joins with it and gets burnt.
Another story is that it makes the water fall to the bottom of the tank and the water can give problems another day.
How much to use? I only use a few capfulls per tank.
Is it good for the diesel and the gas engine and will it eat the rubber components??

Thanks

Copied from Devils Own/Alcohol Injection Website (http://www.alcohol-injection.com/forum/):

Methyl Hydrate is just a another name for Methanol.

I believe it's only like $5.95 for the small can and less than $12 for a gallon still way more expensive then at a speed shop. Most sell it for $2.50 a gallon.

Methyl Hydrate: Is there a difference between Methyl Hydrate, Methanol, and Wood Alcohol?

Answer: There is no difference between these products; it is just a different name for the same thing.

Is there a difference between Denatured Alcohol and Methanol?

Answer: They are not the same, but in most workshop applications either one can be used. Otherwise, Denatured Alcohol is an ethanol-based product and is considered less toxic than Methanol. Check to see if the manufacturer specifies one in particular and follow the recommendation.

Where can I use Methyl Hydrate?

Answer: Methyl Hydrate, also known as Methanol and Wood Alcohol, is used as a fondue fuel, shellac thinner, gas line antifreeze, and, when mixed with water, as a powerful window cleaner.

The guy that I get homemade biofuel from mixes it at a rate of 22% with reclaimed cooking oil. Hasn't hurt my Ford 6.9 yet.

Are you sure he doesn't mix lye with the methanol to make methoxide to mix with the veg oil and make biodiesel? If so there shouldn't be any methanol going into your tank.

frankiee,
Those of us who know use E10 (1GALLON of ethanol per each 10 gallons of fuel) haven't had a frozen gas line in 20+ years. AND E10 is $0.10/gal cheaper than unleaded, AND ethanol is less harmful to the fuel system, AND higher octane. Your ten gallons of gas plus your 12oz. of methanol($1.29) cost you $2.29 more and gives you the same protection????

we use it in our diesel dump truck and our 3505 massey,we've been advised to add abit of atf to the tank as well as it is said to be pretty harsh on injector pumps.

It is methanol, an alcohol, it is missable with water, Like a gin and tonic, It will not seperate in to a bi-layer like gasoline and water does. It works great, it will melt ice in the fuel lines and take it through the motor. It cures the problem. If you buy any of the ethanol gasoline mixes you should not have ice or water problems anyway. However you may have all sorts of other problems, from gaskets and fuel lines to the O2 sensor.

Could be. I don't know. He was telling me about the price of the methanol and said he was mixing it so the fuel was 22%,that's all I know about it. I just use it,I don't make it.

The denaturing agent is usually methanol. It is added to make the mixture undrinkable- or at least very dangerous to drink. Methanol can cause blindness and death.

Scott,
I almost agree with you, BUT GM(1995,&2002Grand Prix), Chrysler(2000Dakota), and Ford(2005F150) all either recommend ethanol or say will not effect fuel system per respective owners manuals. In any urbane area that requires oxygenated fuels you will be hard pressed to find fuel WITHOUT ethanol added.
