Snow Chains

I have been searching around for a set of snow chains for my tractor. Invariably I run into people who have a set but they don't know what they used to fit. They sold the tractor or something and don't remember what it had on it. So I ran a rope around the outside of one of my tires (28-11) and came up with 11 foot 2 inch.

I'm figuring if I can locate a set that long laid out on the ground I'm gonna be in the ballpark right?

The length is quite close to the correct size and I believe 18 or 20 inches for the width. Much information with snow/tire chains is by the old saying trial and error. i am in the process of making/rdesigning a set of ring chains, they are rather heavy. Actually they are laying in the driveway under about 15 cm of newly fallen snow. Another project that is not completed. Cheers, Murray

I would say the distance around the outside of your rims would be closer to what is required for length but any excess can be cut off or allowed to overlap if you want. For width I would take and measure from the rim on one side of the tire across the top of the tire all the way to the other side of the rim. This should get you close. A little wider and you will be closer to the center of the rim on both sides. A little narrower and you will be closer to the middle of the side wall of the tire.

Thanks for all the replies. I have been ogling the tirechains dot com sets but I'm a Mainer now. I gotta give it a shot at being thrifty first.

I'd consider making my own, where would you get parts though? I mean I can find bulk chain but what about the bits that bite into the ice and snow?

I looked at building a set of chains and looked for used chains and decieded it just wasn't worth it.
So I bit the bullet and bought a set from tirechain.com. I rarely buy new but in this case I'm glad I did.
This is my 8th year on them (duogrips) and so far they don't show much wear so I expect to get that much longer on them at least.
They fit perfectly. No need for all the ropes, bungees, wires etc to keep them on.

I've dealt with a company up your way in Skowhegan called Canadian Chains(canadianchainsusa.com). I bought about 25 sets for my trucks and had a problem with a couple of sets. They were great about shipping out new ones right away.
