Am interested in buying a 30/30 real soon, like many people I know, I am gonna get a Marlin 336. Their website lists the 336 in different models, 336A, 336C, and 336W (and in stainless) but doesn't tell the difference between the blued steel models.

Can anybody explain the difference to me?

Thanks for the help!

If you're buying a used gun, the older versions are Model 36, 36A, and before that, model 1936 - instead of 336. I have several of the older models is 30-30 and love them. Much smoother action than the Winchester equivalents.
Also have a newer 336C in 35 Remington.

Some verions as such:
336 Zane Grey only made in 1972
336A-DL - deluxe wood and checkering
336A (plain) - made 1948 to 1963 - brought back
in 1973.
336C - started in 1948 and got the 35 Remington
chambering in 1953.
336T - made from 1953 and offered with 44 Magnum
1963 - 1967.
336DT (Deluxe Texan) - 1962-1964, select walnut
stock, engraving with longhorn steer and map
of Texas.

I have a 36A, and I love it. Only I made the mistake of putting a scope on it. Frankly, with the scope I couldn't hit anything with it. I could shoot tight patterns on a target at 100 yards, and miss a 50 yard shot at a deer.

I took the scope off, leaned over the hood of my pickup, and shot a blackbird out of a tree at 50 yards with the open sights. I just left the scope off and didn't bother to try to figure it out. Maybe the scope was defective.

Why 30-30? Pretty old, almost obsolete cartridge. Why not get something with a higher performance cartridge? By the way, I used a Marlin in .35 cal for a number of years, liked it. Now use .240 Weatherby, never looked back!

Thanks for input,

went to gun store and bought the stainless version

and some of the LeveRevolution ammo.

Thanks again
