Farmall H pto

Can any one tell me how fast the PTO turns on a Farmall H when the tractor is idling? I don't have a tack to check mine.

I am contemplating on using one of my H tractors to run an old Jaeger 3 cylinder air compressor. The engine in the compressor is junk. I'm not going to spend the money to rebuild it. It's an old flat head continental. I'm just wandering what size pulleys I need to use. I don't want to run the tractor at full throttle most likely at half throttle.

I know the compressor ran engine speed which would of been any where from 1,000 - 1,500 rpms. I don't need it to run that fast since I won't need that much CFM's.

Thanks
John

1/2 rpm will be abpout 270RPM. thus to get to 1500 you need about a 5.5 to one overdrive. I would use no less than a 6" pulley on the compressor, so a 30+ inch pulley would be needed.
Since this is too big, a double overdrive might be needed. say 12" to 6" then maybe 13 to 6". These are approximations. a manual shift car trans used backwards will give several gears of over drive usually one would be in the 4 to 5 to one range. Mount it on a trailer and mount the trans in front of it with the driveshaft going to the reversed trans. A shaft tachometer is not too expensive, or could be rented or borrowed. JimN

The compressor needs the flywheel of the engine to smooth out the power flow. Tried it once on a compressor that large and it was awful jerky, BTDT Gene Davis
