After setting in the same spot in the shed for 2 years, the JD 70 runs!! New sleeves&pistons, valves ground, crank turned and new bearings. I put antifreeze and gas in it this afternoon and after shining the points up, it fired up and ran about the 4th revolution. Let it run for a while, no leaks.Rear tire when flat while it was setting there, so I aired it up and pulled it outside and turned it around so I can get to the tire easier to fix it. Still more to do to the old girl, but feel better now that I know she runs. I love it when a plan comes together. Chris

Did you end up putting a taperlock on? Has the head been cracked right there in front of the plug wire conduit? Have you run a compression test since the rebuild? I wonder how long it will take for the rings to seat properly to get the most compression. Did you really have the block sleeved? How much did it cost to do sleeves?
Keep us posted on the progress, I would love to see a video of it when you get it all tightened up. My 70 is LP but I still love hearing the bark a 70 makes.

Bought 45 over sleeves and pistons from this site. Took the block to a machine shop in town and they did all the work on it plus new rod bushings and fitted them to the pistons. Seems like it was close to $400. Haven't got a new flywheel yet, hoping to find a used taperlock, waiting till I get some more $$$$ to throw into it. I figured it ran before, it should run again. Won't use it till I find another, but needed to move it and wanted to make sure it ran before I dumped more $$ into it. I don't think the head was cracked, just a indentation in the casting and the reflection in the paint made it stand out. I'll look again, but I never noticed a weld on it in all the time I had it. I only ran it about 20 minutes or so, haven't done a compression test. After I find a flywheel I'll put it on a disk or else go to the neighbors and see if I can grind a batch or 2 of feed to pull it some. It needs a good cleaning and some touch up on the rusty spots before the hood goes back on. Will post more pictures as it gets farther along. Chris
