PTO terminology

:) I grew up with the impression that there were basicly three types of PTO drives. #1, Transmission drive (when you push in the clutch EVERYTHING stops). #2 "Live" PTO (basicly a transmission drive, but tractor travel CAN be stopped or started without interupting the PTO by use of a separate clutch of some kind). 2 stage clutch, M&W clutch, AC power director are some that come to mind. #3 Independent PTO (tractor can be started or stopped without affecting PTO operation, and PTO can be started or stopped without affecting tractor travel). My point being that option #3 is often called "live PTO" when IMHO it's more than that, and should be called "independent" PTO! What do you all think? :? :|

maybe there should be a 4th category for the n series Fords. the lift won't work on them without the pto engaged, but otherwise they are like a tractor without live pto.

So what about the fergusons that had the ( live or independent PTO) that would reverse when shifted to that position on the lever and backed up?

Agreed ,,I know of 2 Massey 65s that were able to be shifted in reverse and the PTO would reverse slowly with tranny travel .. That was a very nice feature in times of plugging and equipment failure ,, WISH IT WAS STILL AVAILABLE ON ALL american BUILT TRACTORS ...........

Option 3! Yes, people try to read more into it, but your definition is succinct! It has been yummered about for years on this site, and people still cannot understand the concept.

Your Definitions are correct. But as to what I think... It does not much matter... live vs. independant to 99%.

Don"t forget that John Deere A, B, and G tractors with power lift and powr-trol are the same way. The PTO powers the hydraulic pump.

:) Question; Are the hydraulics driven by the PTO or by the transmission? :?: If the PTO, wouldn't the PTO have to be engaged? :? If the transmission, then the hydraulics would work EXCEPT when the clutch is depressed! I ran an 8N 50+ years ago, but CRS has kicked in since! :?
