another sherman tank story

The british installed a very powerful (17pounder ) gun in two thousand sherman tanks. It could knock out any german tank it hit.It was called the Sherman Firefly.Look at Wikipedia firefly.

Here is a pic of a Sherman "Firefly".

They would have to draw a bead and shoot first. The Sherman's armor was no match for the the German guns. The Sherman's main role was infantry support knocking out machine gun nests. It was relativly small (to fit on ships) and produced in large numbers. It was never intended to slug it out with Tigers. The German tanks were in most respects superior but they were complex and prone to breakdown and produced in much smaller numbers than the German army needed. The Germans also would have had a hard time feeding very many more tanks than they had.
The allies best weapon against German tanks was the airplane ie Republic P 47's and Hawker Typhoon/Tempests. Allied air superiority made life difficult (and short) for German tankers.

Agreed. The Sherman was a POS as a battle tank (the role it was pushed into) and the Germans were amazed that a country that could supply their army with the best of every other peice of equipment would send them in the field with a tank inferior to what even the Russians would use.

Even though the Pershing, a tank superior to any other on the field (including the Tiger, Panther and T34) was available and COULD have been produced in numbers to have had an impact from Normandy on the US stuck with the M4 Sherman. But bean counters like Harry Truman insisted that quantity was better than quality (similar to why the P40 was produced throughout WW2 even though it was outclassed from 1941 on) and saddled American soldiers with a second class weapon against a first class opponent.

The germans built some excellent tanks, but the M-4 Sherman mechanically was the superior machine. The Sherman not only ran longer between breakdowns, the treads were good for 2 1/2 times that of German tanks. And because of the long production run parts were easily available. Some German models only ran 100 tanks before switching to a new model, so spare parts were a nightmare.

I read where a German tanker said "One of our tanks was worth 10 Shermans, but there were always 11."
