any of you strawberry growers have any special ideas for growing strawberries. New ways perhaps or tricks of the trade and success stories. I have been searching for other than traditional methods of growing them in Upstate NY. I have tried to purchase plug varieties but they are only sold in 1000 lots and only available in the fall for shipping/planting; so bare root seems to be the way for me. I have been growing them traditionally for some years now but am always open to newer, better ways of doing things as most farm folks are ! Usually I have about 100 plants in production or new sets. I am interested in any info you kind folks can supply about the do's and don'ts , how to's and not to's and especially different methods and cultural practices. I am not set up for Hydroponic culture so the good old mother earth is my setting. Jim

Try Gurney's Seed & Nursery Co. for plants. If you buy 25, you get 25 free. Most of the commerical growers in my area plant Chandler plants and are are planted on raised beds covered with plastic. They can irrigate them too, if needed. Hal
PS: You can get a free catalog from Gurney's too.

I love strawberries but hate the weeds. What about growing them in a verticle column. Make it with 6" PVC pipe drilling holes in the sides so it looks like swiss cheese fill it with soil and put the plants in the holes.

Do you think it would work?

Put them in a old cow feed bunk with soil and mulch under a roof eve don't have to bend over to pick them or water them.
