I'd like to know what are the advant./disadvant. of a 3pt. cutter compared to a pull type? If it helps, I'm looking for an 8 ft deck & have a CIH 4240 w/ dual PTO's & SCV's. Jeff

a pull behind would probably be easier to find and cheaper, plus an 8 foot 3 pt might be a little heavy for the tractor. You may need some weight up front to make a better ride out of it. However I may be thinking of a 4240 as a smaller tractor than it is. If you got a 10 foot pull behind, that might be a better deal, as it seems they are a little more common. just my thoughts.

One thing with a 3 pt is you can back into some spots, that would be hard to get a pull type in, depends on what the land your going to cut is like

I cant think of any real advantage to hanging anything on a 3pt hitch except maybe a bale spear or pallet fork. I just really dislike putting stuff back there. Seriously though, tight cornering and manuervering would be easier with a 3pt rotary mower as your wheel base is shorter.

You could maybe find a 10 foot semi-mount? I have used a 10 foot Bush Hog that has two wheels on the back that are operated by remote cylinder, but it also uses the 2-point. Maneuverability of a 3-point, but none of the weight/balance issues.

Pull type for open fields, but around the farmstead, can't beat a 3 point. Stimulate the economy by buying one of each. And take the wife out to dinner to celebrate the purchases.

I think it really depends on the land and what you are trying to do. We have tons of small fields with hills, ditchs, banks, etc. I can back up a bank with a 3 point mower and then lower the mower to cut the brush. I can lift the mower all the way up to go through a ditch with out scalping it. If I had big open flat fields I would go pull type, but for the stuff I do 3 point is the only way to go.

If you are in Southern Indiana or Kentucky here is a 7 foot pull-type.

I have used pull types several times but don"t like them because of the extra effort it takes to back them and it seems like it takes a 20 acre field to turn them around. I think you have plenty of tractor for an 8 ft. I have a 10 ft howse 3 pt I pull bheind my TN65D the front gets a little light but never any problems. On the JD bush hogs there is an exeptional price difference between the 7 ft single blade and the 8 ft double blade. I like the 10 ft because its wide enough past the tires to get close to the fence posts.

Thanks for the info. The fields I have are small & mostly flat, The issue is the trails leading to them are narrow? I was looking at a Woods 208, 8ft. pull for $ 1650.In working order w/ lift cycl. , just needs some paint. Good deal? Jeff

I use a JD MX10 semi mount works great, Had pull type before was good but only 8' the extra 2' on this one works very well. It is used on a 4430 and 4-6 weights on the front has been plenty.

one problem with the tow behind is the strain put on the u-joints when making tight turns, this doesnt happen on a mounted brush hog.plus the three point unit is easier to just back up to a spot and just drop her and go. bill m.
