Farmall M steering gears

I have a "51 M and the front wheels wobble when on the highway in 5th gear. There is about 1/8 of a turn of play when you turn the steering wheel until it engages with the steering column. I think if have narrowed down where the play is. It is between the gear that engages over the spline of the steering column and the steering column itself. The spline on the top of the column is tapered and there is a matching taper on the gear. It just seems as if the gear won"t go down on the spline far enough to make a tight connection, but I don"t see anyway the gear could go any lower - it is already against the bolster housing.

My question is, Is there a way to raise the steering columm further up in the bolster? It seems that it would then engage the gear fully. I haven"t had the upper or lower bolster off yet and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if such an adjustment is possible. Or do I just have worn parts?

Thanks for any input.

Sounds like thrust bearing in bolster shaft is shot, unit removed from bottom,I put one in 400 loader tractor in Jan. of 08,bearing around fifty bucks or so.Scott

Presently I have a 1941 Farmall H torn down. I just bought it and noticed a lot of lost motion in the steering. I found the same problem with the gear being loose on the shaft. I removed the shaft and found that there was an extra race below the thrust bearing. Waiting on a new bearing to assemble it, but I think that was the problem. One of those problems that you must teardown to find.

Thanks, that is what I am hoping. If the shaft can just come up an 1/8 inch, I think it would take the play out of it.

Thanks for the feedback. The bushings had been replaced a few years ago by previous owner. I lifted the front end off the ground and tried to check for play then and I couldn't detect any, but that isn't to say that when I take it apart that I won't find that the bushings need replaced.

What's your front tires look like? If they are 3 rib and worn that can cause that. But this is very common on the ole M's.

I had a 674 with truck tires on the front when I got it and it had power steering and you couldn't hold it on the road. I replaced the front tires with quad rib tires and it drove just fine.

I do have 3 ribbed tires. They are far from new, but not nearly smooth.

I jacked the front end of the ground and held the front wheels still. That is when I could turn the steering wheel and see that all the play in the wheel happened between the gear and the vertical steering column. I also did the opposite - I wiggled the wheels and they would move left and right, turning the column but the column wouldn't enagage the gear until it had turned a bit.

That is why I think play is in between the spline on the top of the column and the horizontal gear that it mates with.

I appreciate you help!
