Chipper/Shredder Implement

Hey guys, I am sure hoping someone can help me with this. Due to very strict burn regulations here in SoCal, I am looking for alternative ways to dispose of our Apricot/Peach clippings. I know there are many different chipper/shredders that run off of diesel which I could hook onto my Massey. However, is there and implement which would do the same that I could run off my PTO? Or is there one that I could hook up with my Massey and drag around the orchard that can immediately mulch and shred my clippings? Thanks.

Yes there are pto driven chipper/shredders out there I'd look to a arborist site or forestry supply to start with. Then go looking from there.

They do make a 3pt hitch flail style choppers that will work with brush up to about 3" in diameter. Generally they need over 40hp, a creeper gear, and are in the $8k range. They are much heavier than a classic flail mower and the knives are 3-5 lb hammers.

My dad bought one about 8 years ago. It works great. It will chop the brush in almost the same amount of time it took to do the traditional push and burn. All you need to do is drive over the brush. The rest of the year it does wonders for mowing the grass in the orchard. Although burning is still legal around here, many farms are switching over the the choppers.

Here in my part of So Cal the citrus growers use a flail mower that seams to do a fairly good job. I have mulched a lot of tree branches with my 6 ft woods mower, but this takes several passes, where a flail mower will do it in one pass. Now the problem with a flail mower is it takes more hp. I hooked up a 6 ft flail mower to my Massy 231 it has a 3 cyl perkins diesel. It didn't heve enough power to run the flair mower. I would use a rotary mower, and make a few extra passes. I have also seen a chipper that can hook directly to the three point on your tractor. That will take extra work if you have a lot of trees. Where are you located in calif? Stan

I'm located in San Jacinto. The regulations are getting so strict down here that virtually everything has to be run through AQMD.

Nonetheless, this is good news guys. Let me check out those sites. Any more input is greatly appreciated.

I have a PATU DC-40 chipper I run on the back of my tractor, made in Finland Im pretty sure. Works great no problems at all, but it is hard to chip twisty, limby limbs, works perfect for straight piceses thought. I have to cut the limbs off and get the wood as straight as I can so it will go throught. J

I have a Crary "Bearcat" PTO driven chipper on my John deere 650 compact tractor. does an excellent job,but the first thing that wears out is the operator. Would have gotten a power feed, but did not have enough horsepower to pull it and the chipper too. The machine is very useful , but with out power feed you have to practically force any limbs with branches on them down the throat to the knives. The 120# flywheel with the knives on it keeps the chipper going and doesn't die down quite as bad as one with a light knife holder would.

Dad has an older Bearcat unit. Does a fine job.
His 750 gets a work out on bigger stuff. He switched over to the JD 530 for the bigger stuff.

I'd suggest you get new knifes or resharpen yours with a curve on the cutting edge. Also check the gap of the rotor to the fixed knife. This will get it back self feeding again. You can download and print an owners manual off their website.

Could this handle the job? Or is there something similar which would do the job?

I'd shy away from the belt driven finish mowers. In my experience they start eating belts when you get into anything heavy, even just heavy grass. Rotary blades don't do a very good job chopping the brush. They tend to cut enough that it will lay flat on the ground, but that's about it. The flail style does a much better job breaking down the trimmings.

I'm going to see if my Massey Ferguson 290 can handle this machine.
