Rotary tiller behind a Farmall C

Any opinion on how well the pto gears and bearings hold up while using a tiller and or brush hog behind a 48 Farmall C. Can they or do they hold up well.

I have used a 5' hog behind my Super C for years. I'm talking about keeping the pastures mowed, not clearing fields the first time. They get clogged up with multiflora rose. Heavy wet swamp grass will make the C scream in pain but for normal mowing, it will work fine.

I'll second what old said. PTO gears and bearings aren't your limiting factor. They're as good and tough as any.

You ain't gonna slow down that C enough with the engine speed needed to turn the tiller. Throttle it down to get a good ground speed and you won't have enough power or speed on the pto to turn the tiller.

Mower would present no problem.

Will your C go slow enough in 1st with the engine revved to be of any use? Most tractors that lack a dual range won't work with a rotary tiller.

As I recall, a C goes 2 1/2 MPH in 1st gear with the engine running fast enough to make useful power. That's way too fast to run a tiller unless you're tilling in some awful soft soil. You need to slow down to around 1 MPH.

I know my Case VAC and Ford 641 are both useless with rear tillers - or rear snowblowers (same problem). They are both geared the same as a Farmal C in 1st.

MY IH B275 has a dual range trans, and in low range-1st it's just right at 1.5 MPH.

How much to you plan on tilling?

I sell alot of small field cultivators and those who buy them say they like them better than the tillers they have bought before buying the field cultivator.

I would recommend a field cultivator and a mulcher for your Farmall C tractor. Field cultivators have very little maintenance if any thru the years.

Tillers can be high maintenance and expensive on repairs.

Just looking to do some previously tilled gardens in the spring. Do you think it will work for that or not even that will work due to the ground speed.

I don't believe it would work for that either. I know years ago my dad tried one behind our Ford 841 and t didn't work for him and this was in a place that he did a garden every year. Ground speed is just plan to fast you need a tractor that will go down to around 1/2 mile an hour not the 1.5 or so most of the older ones go
