Dad is gonna replace the chain in the barn cleaner this week, and he just took delivery of it today, all in boxes. I put it all togther for him tonight, 204 feet worth of paddles and shoes had to be bolted to the chain. That's 17 sections of 8 paddles, 12' long.

Now we gotta find the time to remove the old chain and install the new. Atleast now with the auger instead of the slide we don't have to put the nuts on the connector links on the bottom anymore.

The first one of those that I put together was when I bought my first air impact wrench. That was just WAY too many bolts to tighten by hand.

You bet. I never really use the impact much when I'm fixing stuff, but on someting like that, it was the first thing I grabbed. Not sure when it's being installed, we've got a few other projects going on that take a little more priority. Atleast till the chain breaks again.

Gotta look & see how many pin & bushings we havce left for the corner wheels also.m Have 4 corners in our gutter, and we have 1 extra base & wheel after removing the slide. Gotta press in a new pin & bushing & then start going around to them all.

One wheel is a solid chunk of plastic, put it in last year. Kinda curious how that one held up as it cost more up front, but it shouldn't be liable to break out like the original cast wheels.

i have no idea what yall are talkin about, could yall post some photos please? when i was growin up we didnt have a barn, we just had a shed.

I am curious, what type of chain is that? I have only been exposed to the Patz type and the Badger style links. What kind of chain is it that you have to bolt together?

Well.... I hope it's better than a Patz chain. Ours is soon due to make it's trip to the orient, boom and all.
The only thing worth saving on it is the motor. I can't wait to see it gone.

That's Badger's heavy duty chain. Wider shoes and heavier links, wears a lot longer. Last time we replaced it, was in 96/97 and we put in used chain. New chain should easily go 15 years.

Our barn cleaner was on it's 2nd (I think) slide when we pulled it out last fall for an auger system. The slide was junk, and I was surpriesed to see the extra couple years we got out of it.

Never dealt with Patz, even though we have a dealer just up the road not even a 1/4 mile.

We rebuilt the drive unit before we carried it into the barn. Overall I think Badger makes a pretty good system. Don't see too many used parts for sale as they ussually run them til they puke and replace. We were lucky when we found the used chain. I think it had about 5 years on it when we had it put in. I remember it was in the middle of winter and our old chain kept breaking, sometimes 3-5 times in one night. Dad went on a business trip to NC, and left us home alone to deal with it. First he got a nasty call from Mom then he said to just call them up and have it done.

I think he had to sleep on the couch when he got home too...

Our neighbou did that this winter, though I don't remember any bolts. He got a whole load of paddles and links in real nice shape and sold the paddles(wrong ones) to a neighbour that could use them. He welded some heavy wall stainless angle iron on about 150 links and painted them all. He hasn't had one break down since. Press the button, come back 5 minutes later and it's empty, not broken.
