Read the label. Get something that is rated for diesel service. Many auto rated oils are no longer diesel appropriate.

If it's a Ford engine, then use diesel rated 15W40. If it's one of the jap ISM engines, use a diesel rated 10W30...

Whatever oil you use check for the CJ-4 Spec. This is the most up to date oil Spec designed for deisel engines running on the ULSD or ultra low sulfer diesel. The old Spec is CI or CI4+ and these don't have what it takes to handle the lesser amonts of sulfer in the fuel. Look at Cenex's TMS 15w40 product. A CJ-4 product.

Just in case, in the remote chance the engine is a two stroke Detroit Diesel since no brand or model info is offered.
The engine oil MUST be a low ash CF-2 rated diesel oil.

The 4500's engine which he is talking about was designed to run on CC or CD spec oil, not CJ-4. As far as I'm concerned it will run well enough on any of them.
The use of low sulfur fuel has no bearing on what oil you use in an old engine.

The ONLY purpose of this new spec oil is for NEW engines which have Tier III emission systems, regeneration systems and particulate filters installed. These systems are designed to run on ULSD and will plug if you use high sulfur or low sulfur diesel rather than ULSD... and the change in the oil was due to the ZDDP additive (zinc) in the older spec oil.
ZDDP will cause problems with the emission systems on these engines, thus it had to be removed from the oil... thus you have a new spec oil which is free of, or has severly reduced amounts of ZDDP.

Some would actually argue that this lack of ZDDP is causing the failure of flat tappet cams in older engines... though I'm not convinced of that. It seems hard to find an older spec oil out there today, so I tend to think the newer stuff is intended for use in older engines. Mabey some day I'll look differently on it....

The only thing I can add to this list that we have used is John Deere 15w-40 diesel rated oil and CNH 15w-40... We actually run the CNH 15w-40 in pretty much everything from small gas engines, old Farmalls, farm trucks, and the diesel tractors and combine with no ill effects in thousands upon thousands of hours of operation.

Can't get my brother to switch away from his Rotella 15w-40 in his Cummins diesel pickups, though...
