Kohler 10HP starting problem

I have a Wheel Horse tractor with a Kohler 10HP ACR engine. It is very hard to start. I crank on it and it will start and idle, but when I try to increase the throtle the engine won"t take it. The engine will only idle. The Carb. throtle shaft was very loose so I replaced the Carb. No difference. When I pull the spark plug and crank it over with my finger in the hole it feels like not much compression. What is this ACR system? I need some suggestions to get this engine running.

ACR means "Automatic compression release"

That engine has to turn over at least 300 rpm before it will start.
Make sure battery is good'

Make sure all ground connections are clean. this will help to have fill continuity/power to the starter.

Check your points gap - it should be .020 to start. Roll the engine forward and back a few degrees to make sure you are setting the points at the right spot.

Then open up the mixture screws on the carburetor a half-turn each. These old Kohlers don't like to run lean.

Check two things make sure that you are using multigrade oil 10W 30 I think is correct.

Also if it idles and won't take throttle then you are starving for gas. Check everything from the tank to the carb to make sure there is no blockage. also check main jet on carb.

I would almost guarantee you have either a burned exaust valve or a blown head gasket. More than likely the exhaust valve. You can pull the head and check them very easily. The valve will be burned and the exhaust seat which is very hard will probably be like new. New valve, grind seats and new head gasket and it will rock and roll again. Good luck.

To check the compression you need to spin the engine backwards. That puts the compression release on the down stroke rather than the upstroke of the piston.
