Jobs, economy, and attitudes....

While on vacation, I went into plenty of walmarts, TSC's, home depots, and had the displeasure of dealing with the Ohio BMV. With the exception of late 40's and older folks, and the staff at Hooters you would think that there was no financial problems and jobs were just waiting to be filled. I waited about 5 minutes at a walmart sporting goods calender before disconnecting a guy's conversation about weekend party plans. Bad enough that he was ignoring a customer, but he had enough balls to threaten me also. He got over it soon enough, but it was pretty unbelievable. Dealt with the people in 2 BMV offices and talked with someone at the Columbus HQ's and wasn't too impressed either. Things must be a lot better than the media lets on...

Dave, I think it's called apathy. People figure they will probably loose their job anyway, so why care about what the costumer wants. I think most of the work ethic in this country is dying out with the baby boomers.

Maybe it is just an Ohio thing?

Service has improved in KY. The last time I was at Lowes customer service was very heavy.

The more rural an area the better customer service seems to be.

walmart was WV, MD and NY. TSC was OH, and MD. BMV was only OH. Nothing real serious, just makes you wonder. Still was a good trip.

Walmart, Home Depot, lowes, Tsc are doing better than any other retailers. I am surprised by the number of workers at the local home depot. Almost suspect the feds are subsidizing them, there are a lot more emplyees than customers. Those of us in our 40's and up are worried about never retiring. But what the heck could go wrong at hooters? I mean the wings aren't really that good, but who cares?? LOL!!

Bought a used truck last month, called the insurance people I have dealt with for over 15 years, the Lady who always handled my account was no longer with the company, no one ever said why she left but she would call a person back. I left repeated messages over two days and waited by the phone a few times - no one ever called. Changed everything over to State Farm, cars, house, liability, outbuildings etc. Called and cancelled at the other place and all they said was they never got a voice mail. It is a small town agency but I guess the owner has his made and can let incompetents run his business in the ground.

Hooters was fine....... The only real complaint I had was the BMV clowns and that one's not done yet. The walmart kid wasn't a big deal.

Service was noticeably better last time I went to the local Home Depot- I was approached immediately by a clerk, didn't have to flush someone out of hiding like in the past. They also had a greeter at the door like Walmart- first time I've seen that at Home Despair.

Dave,

Why the long wait for a visit to the US? I try to spend a week a year there to visit family and am amazed to see all of the stuff the stores have.

I think Home Depot is doing OK since it caters to the "do it yourselfer", that takes off when people can't or won't pay for a professional contractor.

we'd get tired of seeing each other every year.. We know how to contact each other and that we'll be there for each other in a pinch. That's good enough. I think I had more fun in home depot, tsc, and harbor freight than in Hooters

boy dave, i gotta agree with you. seems like a lot of people just dont plain care anymore. i am going thru that right now. i am trying to get a septic field put in on a piece of property in arkansas. called 5 contractors to get estimates. only ONE called back!!!! with how slow the economy is, you"d think they"d jump all over it. as a small business owner, i got out of my way to help customers. i give them quality service at a fair price, and even with the slow economy, i still have work to keep us busy.

I agree pride in your work is just gone. Who can really blame them. Every where you turn there is gloom and doom. People are just not happy. I think it's going to get worse before we see improvment.

Stopped by the vets today to pick up some Bo-Se for the lambs. The lady didn"t recognize my name since I don"t use a vet unless I HAVE to. Vets are expensive, incredibly expensive for what you get. So I explained I was an occasional customer. You"d have thought I was a child molester or something. It was all she could do to bother helping me.

The next time I see the vet I"m surely going to have a talk with him about the treatment his customers get.

These kids today have no drive what so ever. I just hired one back. He kind of plods along. We're going to have a little talk if the pace doesn't pick up some. College kid. Third year back. Claimed he is ready for a little more responsibility, and in return, a little more money. I said ok, thinking he would take a little of the workload off me. I'd hire another kid to work under him, like I did last year. YA RIGHT! He can't even get the lead out of his own a$$. I may hire another college kid, but it might be his replacement.

Bought a pickup load of lumber from Lowes for picnic tables.Young man helped me push the cart to the checkout, helped getting it out to the loading area.Helped load the truck. What more can you ask.A gloom and doom attitude will get you nowhere.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience with insurance agent. I'm sure State Farm agent will be glad to take care of you. My cousin is a State Farm Agent in South Texas. I've spoke with him on the subject, but he says he can't get me a better deal. I've been with USAA over 10 years. Have great service and rates. The day comes this changes and I'll call Michael to set me up with State Farm.
