Farmall A starter motor problem

New purchase today - brought home my 1945 Farmall A with a belly cultivator. She wouldn't start, so I messed with connections and whatnot. I finally took the good battery from my Jubilee and tried it with the Farmall. The starter motor hummed and whirred but didn't seem to engage with the motor. I finally got her to start with the crank and she sound good. I'm worried about the starter and suspect somthing is sheared off inside. Any hints? I'll probably pull the starter tomorrow, but am wondering what to look for or expect.

Also, she seems to buck pretty good when I let out the clutch. The governor really revs untill it's moving, then it settles down. Is this normal? This is my first experience with a Farmall. -Thanks - Jack

Starter drive must be broke or stuck. Pull the starter and it will be easy to determine what the trouble is. You sound confused about the starter so you mite want to take it to a shop that repairs them.

if she dies down alot then revs up when you let the clutch out, make sure she is not set too lean.. might enrichen her a lil and see what that does for you.

ditto ont he starter.. sounds like a drive issue..

Thanks for the advice.

Before I bought the Farmall A, the widow let it set for over a year. I took out the starter and the slip gear on the shaft was real dry ... no oil for a long time. The gear wasn't sliding forward and engaging. I cleaned it up and lubed it. With a new battery it fired right up. Good news!!

I drove it around for a while and now there's a "clunk" in the right rear wheel. Once per revolution in the same spot. It's more pronounced when going up a grade. I guess it's always somthin' Is it probably a bearing?

I put a photo of the tractor in the "Tractor Photos" of the Gallery. It's got a really original title ... 1945 Farmall A. That's me on the right.

Thanks - Jack

Might check all wheel bolts and nuts. They come loose. BTDT. sometimes they are tight but need washers as they are not holding the metal against metal as they should be.
