Crankshaft turned returned dirty

I had the crank turned for my 600 Ford. when I got it back and was ready to put it in the block. It was turned but had not been cleaned. When I took it in, there is a big sign that says we do not work on dirty parts so I did not even ask if that was part of the process. Is that normal with the machine shops yall deal with?

it's really hard to get anyone to do a job, much less do it right and on time. quality and cleanleness seem to be forgotton art now.

Nope. The cranks I get back are cleaned, oiled and bagged.Ready to install.

I'd find another machine shop.No excuse for crap like that.

They always clean any crankshaft in our local machine shop and they come back clean and enclosed in plastic. They've been here 75 years.

how much did you pay and have you checked it for specs. so you know it was turned properly mic both sides of each journal to make sure it is not cone shape. If you decide to clean it all the oil passages need to be checked and blown out.

Pretty amazing what some people let out of their shop. Nothing ever left the shop I delt with for 30 years dirty. everything was hot tanked and glass beaded and where prudent painted. Main reason was so the part could be given at least a good visual inspection for cracks or other damage prior to machine work commencing. If there was a question, the customer was first called and authorization was received before proceeding. I'd be real concerned about a shop that cannot take the time to properly clean a part.

I sure would let them know about it. Then I would take some brake clean and spray it in the oil galleis of the crank shaft while I was blowing some air in it at the same time. This will get any shaving out of the oil gallies. I do this everytime I get an engine back from the machine shop any way. At least I know it's been done. Because those people at the machine shop are only human too!

At the machine shop I go to it doesn't make any difference how dirty I take something in, they hot tank it super clean, then its checked out, if its a crank its turned, then cleaned again, oiled and wrapped in clear plastic, and he don't charge extra for the cleaning, says thats part of turning out quality work.

Also they don't work on clean parts. Every part I sent to a shop, came back cleaned and sealed in a container of some kind. That would be my last trip to them.I would call and let them know why you will never be back.I would take it to another shop and have them check it.

That is the way most quality machine shops do it. However, never assume that it is "ready to install", even if it is in a sealed bag. ALWAYS clean it again. Just good practice. Mike

I agree with the others. If I take a head in to have the valves ground, it needs to come back ready to install. If it came back dirty, they wouldn't be getting paid.

Don"t know where in SC you are but next time make a run to IF Engineering in Charlotte. We"ve been dealing with those guys since back in the 70"s and they wouldn"t even think of doing something like that. It doesn"t matter how clean or dirty a part is it gets hot tanked and if needed steam cleaned before they touch it. When their done, very crank, etc is tagged with a disclaimer and warning to clean out the oil passages, check for proper plugging on blocks, etc but at the same time every part is clean and bagged and for the most part ready to install. Personally I"d have told your guys when picking up the crank that I don"t install dirty parts anymore than they work on them and that I expected it to be clean before I left and then just stood there and waited. If they didn"t make good on things then it doesn"t take long for posts like this to make it"s way around with a shops name and a bad rep goes along way toward cutting off their business.

Last time I had a block bored, 4 different shops wanted me to have the block hot tanked BEFORE I brought it in. I finally found a one man shop that does fantastic work and cleans parts after the machine work is done.

Prior to that, I gave up in disgust at a NAPA machine shop. Two different 5.7 SBC engines, both running, but tired, when I tore them down. On one, the crank came back with the bolt for the harmonic balancer broke off in it, and on the second the block needed to be align bored because the crank locked up when I torqued the #3 main bearing. The shop was obviously keeping all the choice stuff for themselves and their buddies and dumping junk back to customers off the street.

I told the manager, IF I ever bring any parts in again, I'll make a punch mark where you can't find it so I'll know if I get my own parts back. He was obviously disturbed at the thought, but I never had occasion to take anything back there.

This machine shop once had the reputation for being the best in town. The truth is for a short time I worked there when I was going to college. I did call back when I found it like that and the lady laughed and said it does not work that way[coming back clean]. The sad thing is there is no quality work to be had here. The closest place I know of is in Columbia a 100 miles away. Live and learn. Thanks Guys I just needed to know what standard practices were when I talked to the owner.

I cant remeber the name of the place in Charlotte I toom a block to be fixed, could have been IF though. They did an outstanding repair on the block, cleaned, bored, and lined bored the crank journals and cam journals, and did a 100% professional job.

A friend of mine in Cherokee, IA who built sprint cars for years said that the shops he used for those high dollar motors did good work, but anything from lawnmowers to sprint car motors must be thoroughly cleaned before assembly if you want it to stay together.

On the rare occassions I've gotten parts back that I needed to install they are always cleaned and shrink wrapped. Normally if its an engine, I always have them build the short block. While I can do it, having them do it (for 300 dollars) is cheap insurance. Then I have a warranty on the machine work. If I do it, and something bad happens, I may not be able to prove it wasnt my fault on the reassembly.
