My wife got some chickens this spring. Some big white ones, some reddish brown and some bantams.Three of the Bantams are booted. My question is how do you tell how many roosters we have.
Thanks
Stan

Spurs are the easiest way to tell. They will kind of curl up on the bird's leg. I had a big red rooster that it took 3 good kicks to teach him who the boss was. He would jump and try to beat his wings in my face. Once he figured it out he would only protest when I would gather the eggs.

We got a rooster once from a neighbor because it was too aggressive. The neighbors were now scared of it, but didn't want to kill it because it originally had been a child's pet. I scoffed at the idea of living in fear of a bird figuring I could "train" him to respect humans. I trained him to not attack me directly, but he then figured out I was vulnerable if attacked from behind. I learned an important lesson in bird-training a few weeks later with a 6 inch gash down my thigh (cut right through my jeans with his spur). He didn't taste as bitter as I expected he would though.
