New style sickles???

Anyone one on here tried these Schumacher Easy Cut sickles?

I have heard they really cut down on beans shattering at the sickle on a combine.

The guard is sharp on the top as well as the bottom and cuts cleaner and faster without the plant shaking all over and loosing beans because of the shaking.

Kinda pricey but if I can save a 1/2 bushel of beans to the acre, it will pay for itself.

Claims are you can travel faster and do a cleaner job as well.

Sickle life is said to be greater as well.

Well, how does it compare in price to a new sicklebar and a new set of guards? A farmer here years ago said he could save enough beans per acre to pay for a new sicklebar instead of sharpening and patching the old one. Back in the day when my cousins were cutting a lot of hay they decided it was cost effective to buy a new cutterbar assembly for a JD sickle bar mower. Also, how many acres will that set up last before needing replacing? If you have enough bean acerage you could justify replacing it each year, smaller acerage it needs to last more that one year.

67 degrees here this AM. Daytime temp in the upper 80s. I could be spoiled by this.

A complete set of gaurds, holdowns, wear plates and a sickle is not cheap either. Looks like it would work pretty slick being it cuts on top and bottom being balanced.

I get about 800 acres out of a sickle and guards. I have been told these Schumacher setups will last twice as long.

And they save more beens than a regular setup will.

The Schumacher setups are twice as high as the regular to start with. They are said to travel easier so the rest of the grain head will last better as well. Etc wobblebox bearings ,belt and so on.

So if you can believe all they say,the price over time will be them same, if they do all they say they will.

Sooo will they do all they say they will?

I have the Crary system on one of our NH tables. I like it since it has the spring loaded holddowns but with no-till when the humidity comes in the guards will spear some of the corn stalks that stick up and then pile up dirt and stalks on top of the sickle. I did roll my feederhouse face plate back and pretty much cured the problem. I do run the double point knives rather than the single sections. I can run upto 6.5 mph and still cut clean. Other NH table is stock hardware as far as I know but they have every other knife upside down. Not sure if it makes a difference of not.

Bought and installed one with the roller guides last fall after harvest. Made in Germany. IH OEM cutter bar was doing a marginal job and decided to either replace the whole head or upgrade the sickle assembly. Finally decided that purchasing a newer head might potentially result in more repairs/problems. Many positive SCH comments on other farm forums. So rather than lose 50% of that $6.00 corn and $13.00 bean profit to government taxes, spent it all which included buying a new SCH. Made a small change from the suggested installation by adding a half knife on the end of the right side. Required cutting an extra hardened knife in half and drilling a second hole which was tough. Seems to work good, and if it doesn't cut low enough will consider installing on the bottom side of head, which others have successfully done. However if this is done might need to go back to the standard guides, wear strips, since a bottom installation is not recommended when using the roller guides. So far would give a "thumbs-up".

Gary, for what my opinon is worth.it would be some of the best money you can spend. On my 200 Deere head .I had all 3 JD,Tiger Jaw and SCH and on 2000 -2500 Acres on the SCH only changed one or two sections and no guards. On my 925F,it was changed the second yr.and has maybe couple thousand acres on the SCH bar now and just cut wheat with no problems at all.Try Shoup for pricing, they had the best pricing and free shipping.Good luck and hope corn and bean prices go back up.

I knew the FIL had that on his gleaner heads. Talked to him tonight and he says yes it is worth the money and really the cats meow when I asked him about it. Those germans know what they are doing.

I double checked the sickle on our 30' table as I am changing the knives today and it isn't stock like I thought but rather a CFC sickle system. Every other is upsidedown. Might want to check them out at cfcdist.com.
