spark plugs for a 1928 john deere d s/n 57738

what is the correct spark plug for my tractor? It does no work except idle at shows. It runs on one cylinder with an occasional pop from no. 2.

It has champion w89d plugs in it. the mag has been rebuilt, as has the entire tractor. so no leaking inlet/exhaust manifold.

I may need a hotter plug, but what is it? and where can I get it. hard to believe that there is a hotter plug than the w89d. It's porcelin insulator sticks out of the body by about half an inch.

many thanks for any help you can offer. It will be much appreciated.

I have had good performance from Autolite 3077 plugs in the old John Deeres, Champion plugs don t seem to work very long in the Deeres.

I second the AC 3077 recommendation. I get mine at the local O'Reilly's
Auto Parts.

The deep reach hotter side wire electrode plugs (if it takes the 7/8 plug that is!!!!!!!!!!! some use the pipe thread type of plugs) like Autolite 3077 can help reduce premature fouling, but if its bad to fire on only one cylinder Id be looking at the mags cap and rotor assembly (cracks, chips, carbon traces, broken carbon brushes etc etc) and inspect the plug wires.

Cool, yep, thats why I warned above it could have the "pipe thread" type of plugs verus the 7/8 which the Autolite 3077 indeed are.

This tractor uses the 7/8 pipe plug thread type. I have tried autolite 3095 plugs which are short reach, champion 25 which are long reach and the current w89d champion, also long reach plus the electrode extends about 1/2" out of the bottom of the plug housing. this has to be the hottest plug of the group.

the mag on this tractor is the original splitdorf which was overhauled and shows nothing obvious on cap, rotor and elsewhere. no carbon tracks. the brushes are not broken and are loose in their seats. the plug wires are new and soldered to the end clips.

I will try the autolite 3077, assuming it is a deep reach, 7/8" pipe thread plug.

any other ideas?

many thanks for the tips.

I have looked at the autolite 3077 plug at napa but it is not the 7/8 pipe thread configuration. the plugs I have are champion w89d, which are long reach with side electrode and with the insulator extending about 1/2" out of the end of the plug. certainly a hot plug, but it is a champion, which most think is not the best for this tractor. I was not able to find the pipe thread equivalent of the autolite 3077 plug.

now what? am I stuck with some sort of antique two piece plug that is not a champion? If so, what?

pete

you are right, my plug is a 1/2" pipe thread.

but what plug do I want? Is there a 1/2 pipe thread equivalent of the autolite 3077 or something else non champion?

thx

pete

the autolite 3077 fits my 1948 d, which uses the 7/8 machine thread.

are you aware of a 1/2" pipe thread equivalent of the autolite 3077?

thx
