bailing straw question

If there's no hay or grass in it we bale it right behind the combine. If there some or lots of hay best leave it for a couple of days to let the green dry,the more the green, the more the drying time.pd.

About the same as it would take to dry equivalent hay if you have a lot of green stuff. Otherwise right behind the combine.

If it is for your own use it is best to leave it get rained on. That washes the dust off and makes it more absorbant. Now if your going to sell it then bale it as soon as posible after the combine so it keeps a brite shiny color. Because we all know straw as with hay you are selling "color is everything"

Just feel the windrow and bale it when it is dry, which will be about the second day after combining if it is "clean" and the weather is good. Raking it fluffs it up and gets air through it to dry better.

Old wives tale on straw being better if rained on.

Why anyone would ever let it get rained on on purpose is beyond me--especially if big windrows--hard to dry back out, possible damp/moldy bales, raking and re-raking, etc. Bale it ASAP and go on vacation once it is stored away!!

this is just another 'farmer' debate. everyone's opinion is the correct one, just ask them. my grampa would never bale his straw until it had at least one rain on it, he said to take the 'shine' off of it so it would soak up manure better. we bale ours right behind the combine because we sell most of it.
