Will It Work?

The 1066 is tied up on the field cultivator so I'm gonna throw the duals on the 966 and see if it will pull this darned crust buster if and when the weather ever breaks.

Then back off again to do more hay.

I think I need another old tractor. Maybe a nice 1486 'er somethin'? :>)

Fighting duals on and off just isn't my strong suit. :>(

Good idea!

Haven't been able to get in the field for the past 10 days or so.

Been raining every other day; I'm not complaining, but I sure am behind all of a sudden.

Got every darned tractor I own fueled up and at the ready. When it does break, I'm gonna be one busy little feller. :>(

Do you really need duals in your ground? Or is it likely to be wet enough in spots that you will need the duals to try to stay on top of it? Surely that crust buster doesn't pull so hard the 9 will need more traction to use its horsepower. I grew up farming clay and no one around used duals, there were some 2+2's and a few MFD Magnums but duals just weren't used. When I bought my 5020 I left the duals on because they were loaded and it just wasn't worth the hassle to take them off.

We have a similar 18' spring tooth that we pulled behind our Massey 285 (80-85 HP) and it would do it. Was a hard pull, but it did it.

Thats why I liked the clamp on duals in 18.4x38's. I could run the tractor up on a 4"x4", roll the dual to the tractor from the leanin" post, twist it close and push the top up and put 1 of the j-bolts in the eye and it was secure enough to add the other 3 j-hooks and tighten with a box end wrench. Done ready to go....James

Allen, is that a Kent? Looks just like the one I used to have but mine was 24" and had small shovels on the teeth and a harrow attachment. Did a good job finishing before planting, but wasn"t too great getting through trash.

Allen, instead of a 1486, I think you need a smaller size Steiger. They will use less fuel per acre, and get you out of the field quicker. I have a PT 225,with 245 HP, 6993 total hrs., with engine overhauled last winter, pretty good shape. I can't keep it busy enough to justify keeping it, so I am probably looking to sell it. My email is open if you are interested. Wayne

Allan, you need something GREEN around there - a nice 4x4 will make quick work of your field chores...

Or go MFWD and really enjoy feeding those critters during the winter!

I'm sure your 966 will handle that just fine. When I was working for a friend with a 966, we pulled a 14' Sunflower offset disc to break alfalfa and sod, didn't have duals and it handled it just fine at 6 mph. Was funny because it would pull the tractor sideways a bit when I dropped the disc in the ground.

Skip the 86 series and get a 5288 if you're stuck on IH equipment. To really upgrade get a 7220, I've heard that the original 71- and 72-series Magnums were some of the best tractors from CIH.
