I did a good deed

A couple years ago I was at an estate farm auction and behold was one of the tractors I have always wanted. It was an all original farmall super m t/a diesel that was an original one owner tractor. I didnt even know it was there because it wasnt on the sale listing till I got there. It broke my heart the family was sellin this mans equipment off because he had to be put in a rest home. I couldnt beleive it when I had the wining bid. Heck nobody seemed intrested in it. So yesterday had it out drivin it around when a guy stoped me and was askin about that tractor. Come to find out it was his dads tractor I had bought at the auction and he was unable to be at the sale and that it was sold by mistake. I went from feelin proud of my tractor to a feeling of sickness. He even had the original bill of sale for it and matched all the serial numbers. He told me how he desperatly was tryin to find me the last couple years but couldnt because I had moved and changed my land line to just havin a cell phone. So needless to say my super m and i parted ways today but I feel really good when a man gets reunited with a family heirloom.

Not only you can hold your chest out proud, you made a friend today and that is not material.

I just hope you can find another Super M soon.

We dont get a chance to do something in life like that very often. This tractor had real meaning to him and I can always find another tractor, but to have something your father had used and made a living on and that was part of your childhood well I just couldnt have lived with my self not to let the wrightful owner have it back

Good for you. I hope for his sake though he made it worth your while and did not get it for the auction price.
I am sure you put something into the tractor in those couple of years.

When grandpa died back in the early 90s, all three of his tractors (D-17, WD-45, and a WD) were put up for sale. Sadly, the first two are long gone, but I managed to go half and half with somebody on the WD. Then after awhile I managed to buy their share of the tractor, and low and behold, managed to hang on to this family heirloom. Wish I still had the 45 as well, but I didn't have that kind of money.

Great story though. Good job done today.

U prolly wont believe me but it had been taken such good care of that in the two years all i did was buy batteries and put fuel in it. I know how much it was worth but I did actually sell it for what I bought it for I wouldnt have felt rite about it otherwise.

You just gave HOPE to a lot of other folks out there looking for their family's tractor.

You did good; I'm shaking your hand right now.

I know how he feels tryin to track a family owned tractor down. My great grandpa had a john deere L I want but the neighbor just wont sell it but he said Id be first in line if he ever did.

Good job guy, you have my utmost respect.

As I post, I have a JD A that I have held on to for around eighteen years. I offered it to the original owners sons before I went any where with selling it. The boys were not interested at all, but a couple months later the father of a ten year old boy entered the picture. This would be the great grandson of the original owner. His grandma was a daughter to the older man, and found out it was for sale.

So far I have offered to sell it for Two hundred less than I was offered, and will leave the money in it with only a promise to pay someday.

It makes me feel good, that my old friends great grandson will probably own and drive the tractor---It should be no other way. But my kids are giving me a rough time about it. They want it now for a pulling tractor. This is the very first sign that my kids are the least bit interested in my old junk. My kids only see dollars so far in life, but I hope that will change.

nickg, Dang! I know it was tough to let go of it But, You Done Good!!! We have all read the request where someone is looking for Dads or Granddads Tractor or what ever. As others have said to you help reunite a family heirloom to its riteful place. Just keep looking and you will find one for yourself.
Later,
John A.

You made a friend for life. Here is what happened to me. My Dad bought a Farmall F12 from another farmer back in the late 30's or early 40's. Dad used that tractor for cutting beans two rows at a time at night. It also had a buck rake attachment to bring the hay shocks to the stationary bailer. The tractor was last used for farming around the early 60's. It has been in our family ever since. The family Dad bought it from had several son's. The one remaining son says he would like to buy his dad's tractor back. He is probably around 85 now. I told him we don't want to sell the tractor at this time. I probably have as many memories of that tractor as he does. That old tractor never had a bit of trouble as I can remember. Stan

As Grandpa said in Fields of Home, Good on your head, good on your head. Indicating patting a boys head in appreciation.

For several years I attempted to work with a fellow on getting his grandfathers 1949 Chevy one ton truck back into his hands.

I had the truck which was my sole transportation. All I asked for was a dependable replacement comparable truck pre 1970 so that I could take care of the mechanical needs on it. All he ever offered was pure junk, mostly rusted out whereas mine had a good engine, cab, and interior.

I finally went to the effort of finding one and called telling him of it and that I was preparing to do major work on my old truck so it was this one or not at all.

Bottom line is that he didn't want his grandfathers truck if it meant spending more than $1,000. I proceeded to shorten the frame, the bed and made other changes as well.

So glad to see that you worked with the fellow and he with you. I really wish my try had gone as well.

You are correct, you did do a good deed! The world could sure use more people like you. A handshake from MN.

Well I guess you must be pretty well off.Spending a day at the sale, tying up your money for a couple years and then selling the tractor for less than what you had in it won't pay the bills. The fellow should have at least given you what you had in it and a couple hundred for your time and effort. But if you're happy I sure he is.

I know how good it feels to find an old family tractor as I bought my grandfathers John Deere B back two years ago. Selling that tractor was the nicest thing you could do. I hope he appreciates that tractor as much as I do mine.

HANDSHAKE FROM OHIO ! I think we all wonder what we"d do in your shoes, but when the dust settles you did right!

I sure wish someone would show up to buy one of my piles of junk that was his grandpa's. I'd sell for a song, and he could sing it himself.

I was at a garage sale the other day and found an old transit that I wanted for $10 so I put it aside and then piled some other stuff on it so people would know I wanted it. Then some old Coot came up and said would you remove your stuff from my box. I said what box. He said that one and pointed at the Transit. I said I was going to buy it that's why my stuff was on it. He said I just payed for it and its mine. Like an idiot I let the Guy have it. Now I'm thinking why! I had it set aside for me and he bought it right out from under me didn't even take it to the cashier just went down an payed them then came back for it. Next time he won't get away with that one.

Like I say good for you.

I do know a guy here that pretty much did the same thing the guy you sold the tractor to and then sold the tractor for a 300% profit though.

Congratulations-that was the right thing to do. I did the same one time with an old MM U. Sold it to him (it was his Dads tractor)for what I paid for it. If the shoe was on the other foot, I would hope that I could buy back one of Dads old tractors without being gouged.

I would have preferred the Auctioneer to approach me, any one else, no go. Did you actually prove he was the son??.A piece of paper is just that.
