ATF uses???

What are some uses of ATF that you've heard to be useful (other than being used in an automatic transmission)? I've heard of it being a fuel additive, in gasoline, but I don't know why? Also a comment on the Oliver forum today mentioned ATF being added to a wheel bearing. What does this do?

I"ve got some (about a 3/4 cup) in the engine oil to of my car to clean up a problem with a pecking lifter. works as penetrating oil also, and mixed with diesel fuel (50/50) to unstuck an engine. I am sure others will chime in on this.

I have all ways used it in fuel to clean up injectors. Was better than a lot of cleaners.
I asked last week, and got no answers, about modern ATF with all of its additives, like non-slip, if it is still safe to do this. And if so, which ones?
These fuel pumps in the gas tanks, could use a little bit more lubrication than modern gasoline has.

Hello 550Doug,
Log splitter fluid. On a pinch 10WT motor oil.
Wheel bearing? not really. Wet hub takes 90 WT gear oil.
Guido.

The post you referenced stated that the bearings were greased, but poster added a little ATF in the cap. I wondered too.

After cleaning out our parts washer we always added a quart of atf to the mineral spirits to make it a little easier on the hands.

Of course you know I'll say it is good for un-locking stuck engines. It is also good for soaking those old rusty tools in to get them working as they should. Also works as a gas additive and pretty much does the same thing as MMO does. Can also be added to oil to help clean up the insides of an engine. Also a good power steering fluid. Also good for cleaning up things that as sticking and or need cleaned out. I have even used it to clean up bearings that are not spinning freely

It works real good for the bonfire while trying to burn up branches and tree brush.

I also use used trans fluid for bar/chain oil, after I strain it threw a cloth.

Used to use it in the fuel in my 385 Cummins in my Kenworth 125 back in the 60's. Kept it running good no matter what fuel you got at the Truck Stops. Who can remember the Skelly Truck Stops or when Union 76 stops were for fuel only,no 40 acres of glitz to get what little money you had in your pocket or before Iowa 80? JH

A fellow who worked blending AFT said this.It is 20w oil and a red dye with some seal conditioners. The magical quality are BS.....

I second the gun oil nomination. I soak my old black powder revolvers in it after cleaning with soap and water, then let excess soak into a rag before putting the grips back on. Never had any rust problems with them and they function flawlessly.

When I get a ratchet that is getting a little sticky or bound up, they get a soak overnight. Loosens them right up. I picked up or been given several "bad" or "no good" ratchets and this fixed them right up.

As a kid working in a gas station after school, was a fella dumped a quart in every 100 gallons. I asked him why and he said kept them injectors clean and lubed. I worked there for years, saw him every Sunday when he filled that same truck up, so...

I personally never tried it, but use Power Source or Howes.

he is correct about the 20 wt oil ,but he forgot to mention it don't have the same additives as a motor oil if you were to use motor oil in a car transmission you may end up with a problem similar to using hydraulic jack oil in a master cylinder.
